4.5.3.ConnecttoaVNCServer

WhenyouruntheprogramfromtheHomescreen,you'llbetakentotheVNC

clientthatwillallowyoutoconnecttoaremotecomputerrunningtheVNC

servercomponent.Tomakeaconnection,enterthenameorIPaddressofthe

computertowhichyou'dliketoconnectintheHostfield.Ifthecomputer

requiresapassword(anditshould!),enteritinthePasswordfield.Figure4-8

showsthescreenyou'llseewhenmakingaconnection.

TheShareDesktopoptionshouldbeenabledifyou'dlikeotherVNCclientsto

beabletoconnecttoyoursessionontheVNCserveratthesametimeyouare

connected.TheNCMoptionstandsforNokiaCompatibilityModeandcanbe

ignored.

UsethetrackwheeltobringupthemenuandclickConnect.Theclientthen

attemptstomakeaconnectiontotheVNCserver,asshowninFigure4-9.

Onceconnected,you'llbeabletoviewthedesktopandusethemouseonthe

remotecomputer.Tousethemouse,clickthetrackwheelandselectMode.

Amousepointerwillappearinthescreen,asshowninFigure4-11.Ifyou're

usedtousingastandarddesktopversionoftheVNCclient,you'llnoticethe

familiarreddotthattheremotemousepointerfollowsaroundthescreen.

I'mnotexactlysurewhy,butthereisafullscreenmodeincludedforthoseof

youwhohavethevisionofahawk.Iwouldn'trecommendtryingtouseit.



BecauseyouareoperatingoveraGPRSorothercellular-based

network,youwillnoticeasignificantdelayusingtheclient.Ifyouare

usedtothedesktopversionofVNC,you'llprobablygrowweary

waitingforthescreentorefreshonyourBlackBerry.Ofcourse,when

youareinabind,thiscouldcomeinhandy.



Ifyou'rewillingtospendalittlemoney,thereisanexcellentremotecontrol

clientandserverthatworkswellontheBlackBerrycalledRemoteDesktopfor

Mobiles(http://www.desktopmobiles.com/).Ithasbetterperformancethan

VNC,althoughitworksonlyontheWindowsplatform.



Hack41.UseGoogleMaps



AlthoughGoogleprovidesaccesstomapsforhandheldsthroughGoogle

Local,thishandyprogramworksverysimilarlytothefullbrowser

implementationofGoogleMaps.

It'shardtooverestimatetheimpactontheonlinemapindustrythatGoogleMaps

(http://maps.google.com)hashad.Thecrisp,readablemaps,alongwiththe

integrationwithGoogleLocal,havemadequiteasplashintheonline

community.ButmostagreethatthemostinnovativefeatureoftheGoogleMaps

interfaceisitscleveruseofJavaScripttocreateauserexperienceinasimple

webbrowser,rivalingthemostpolishedofdesktopsoftwarewithoutrequiring

browserplug-ins.



4.6.1.UseMobileGMaps

YoucanuseaprogramcalledMobileGMaps(http://www.mgmaps.com/)to

accessGoogleMapsfromyourBlackBerry.Itisavailableforfreeandyoucan

downloaditovertheairrightfromyourdevicebygoingtotheirWAPinterface

(http://wap.mgmaps.com/).

Onceinstalled,usetheMGMapsiconontheHomescreentoopentheprogram.

You'regreetedwithamapoftheUnitedStates(seeFigure4-12),thesame

defaultviewyou'llfindonGoogleMaps(http://maps.google.com).

UsethetrackwheeltoaccessthemenuandselectSearchtoenteranaddressto

searchfor.Youcanperformsearches,suchasrestaurantsinNewYork,NY,or

youcansearchforaspecificaddressintheWherefield.Youcanalsochoose

whethertoviewaregularstreetmaporasatelliteview.Onceyoursearchresults

arereturned,usethetrackwheeltohighlightoneoftheresultsandchooseSelect

fromthetrackwheelmenu.Thiswilldownloadtheappropriateimagesfrom

GoogleMapstoyourBlackBerryanddisplaythemasshowninFigure4-13.



4.6.2.UseGMapViewer

GoogleMaps'ssophisticateduseofJavaScript(atechniqueknownasAJAX)is

notyetavailableinanyhandheldbrowser,butthereisafreeprogramfor

handheldscalledGMapViewer(http://www.sreid.org/GMapViewer/)thatcreates

alookandfeelthatissimilartowhattheGoogleMapsinterfaceprovidesto

desktopbrowsers.BecauseitiswrittenaccordingtotheJ2MEspecifications,

youcanrunitonyourBlackBerry!

4.6.3.ViewaMap

Toviewamap,clickthetrackwheelfromthemenuandselecttheSearchmenu

option.Thisbringsyoutoascreentocreatesearchesforcitiesandaddresses,as

showninFigure4-15.SelectNewsearchfromthemenuandenteranaddressor

cityforaplaceforwhichyou'dliketoviewamap.You'llneedtoenterthe

addressallonthesameline.

ClickthetrackwheelandchooseOK.Thesearchyouenteredissenttothe

service'swebinterface(moreonthislater)andisvalidated.Oncethesearch

returns,usethetrackwheeltochooseSelectfromthemenu,andyouwillbe

takentothemapforthatlocationinanotherscreen.



4.6.4.NavigatetheMap

Youwillnoticeasimilarlookandfeeltotheclickanddraginterfaceyou'reused

toinyourdesktopbrowser.Usethetrackwheeltoscrolltotheedgesofthemap,

andthenewsectionswillbefilledinonthefly.Figure4-16showstheprogram

asyouscrolltothemap'sedge.Noticetheorangeandblueblocksthatappearfor

areasonthemapthathaveyettobedownloaded.Also,thewirelessactivity

arrowsindicatethatthemissingimagesarebeingretrievedontoyourdevice.

4.6.5.AddaMapPin

Youcanaddnewmappins,whichwillbestoredinamenuforeasyaccess.

Thereisacrosshairinthemiddleofthemapscreenthatstayscenteredasyou



scrollaroundthemap.Atanytimeifyouwouldliketocreateawaypointasa

locationbookmark,clickonthetrackwheelandchooseNewMapPinfromthe

menu.Thisbringsupatextentryfieldinwhichtoenterastringthatidentifies

thelocation.Afteryou'vetypedthetextforyourmappin,chooseOKfromthe

trackwheelmenu.You'llbereturnedtothemapyouwereviewing,andyou'llsee

aredmappinwiththetextyouenteredonthemap,asshowninFigure4-17.

Themappinsyoucreatearestoredonyourdevice.YoucangototheMappin

menutoviewallthepinsyou'vecreatedandgodirectlytothatsectiononthe

map.

4.6.6.HowDoesThisWork?

GMapViewerisusedinconjunctionwithawebservice.Thiswebserviceactsas

agatewayandrunsasaPHPapplicationthatcanbedownloadedalongwiththe

sourcecodefortheJ2MEclientsoftware.Bydefault,theclientpointstoacopy

ofthewebservicerunningattheauthor'swebsite.Besureandcheckthe

GMapViewerwebsiteforupdatestheauthorcurrentlystatesthatthegateway

couldbetakendownatanytime.

Ifthegatewaywasputoutofservice,Iwouldanticipateanotherkindsoulto

provideadifferentgatewaythatclientscouldpointto.Becauseboththeclient

andgatewaycomponentsarereleasedundertheGPL(GNUPublicLicense),you

coulddownloadthesourcecodeandrunaGMapViewergatewayonyourown

webserver!



Hack42.TelnetorSSHtoInternetServers



TailthatlogfilefromanywhereyouhavecellcoveragewiththeMidpSSH

telnet/SSHclient.

Onceyou'veconfiguredyourdeviceforTCP/IP,youcanuseopensourceTelnet

andSSHclientstoconnecttoaserverontheInternet.Nodoubtyouwon'tbe

abletouseyourgod-likeviskillsonyourBlackBerrykeyboard,butthiswill

giveyouthefullSSHaccessyousometimescan'tlivewithout.



4.7.1.InstallandUseMidpSSH

Similartomostapplications,MidpSSH(http://www.xk72.com/midpssh/)

providesover-the-airinstallsanddownloadsforinstallingviaDesktopManager

andApplicationLoader.MidpSSHalsoprovidesvariousversionsoftheir

software.Youcangetthefullversionthathassupportforanyofthevarious

protocolsyou'dneedtouse:Telnet,SSH1,SSH2,andvariouscombinationsof

these.Thespace-conscioususerwillliketheabilitytoinstallaversionofthe

softwarethatcontainssupportonlyfortheprotocolstheyneedandnothing

more.



BesuretochoosetheBlackBerry-specificversionofMidpSSH.The

genericSSH1andSSH2builds(fullandlite)willprobablynotwork

onaBlackBerry.



Onceinstalled,selectSessionsandusethetrackwheeltochooseSelectfromthe

menu.Ascreenappears,allowingyoutodefinethesettingsforyourconnection,

asshowninFigure4-18.Scrolldowntoenteryourusernameandpassword.

4.7.2.EnterCommands

MidpSSHconnectstotheremotecomputerandusestheusernameandpassword

youdefinedintheconnectiontoauthenticatesoyoudon'thavetotypeit(thank

goodness!).Althoughitappearsyoushouldbeabletostarttypingcommands

justasyouwouldfromacomputer,MidpSSHforcesyoutousethetrackwheel

tochooseInputfromthemenu.Itgivesyouablankscreeninwhichtotypeyour

fullcommandand,unliketheSSHclientyou'reprobablyusedto,thecharacters

youtypearen'timmediatelysenttotheremotemachine.MidpSSHallowsyouto

typeyourcommandandthensenditallatoncetotheremotecomputer.This

givesyoualittlenicerinterfacefortypingandallowsyoutocorrectthemistakes
