theprocessfaster,that'sgreat.Buttherewillalwaysbethat

onelastbuyerwhohasn'tsentthecheckyetandtheregoes

yourschedule!



ThePost-AuctionProcess

Whathappensduringthepost-auctionprocessisactuallyrather

cutanddried.Putsimply,youcontactthewinningbidderwitha

finalprice;heorshesendspaymenttoyou;youpocketthe

payment;youpackageandshiptheitem;thebuyerreceives

theitem;andyoubothleavefeedbackforeachother.

youbyemailthatyourauctionhasended.Thisemailmessage,

liketheoneshowninFigure21.1,willincludetheuserIDand

emailaddressoftheitem'shighbidder.

Severalthingscannowhappen:

IfyouacceptpaymentviaPayPalandifthebuyeroptsto



payviacreditcardorbankdebit,hecaninitiatepayment

fromtheend-of-auctionemailhereceives.Ifthebuyerpays

immediatelylikethis,you'llreceiveasecondemail

informingyouofthecompletedpayment.

Ifthebuyerdoesn'tpayviaPayPal,hecanstillgothrough

eBay'scheckoutprocess,whichthensendsyouanemail

notifyingyouofthebuyer'sintentiontopayviacheckor

moneyorderorwhatever,andprovidingyouwiththe

buyer'sshippingaddressandotherrelevantinformation.

Ifthebuyerdoesn'tpayorcheckoutimmediately,youcan

sendthebuyeraninvoice.JustclicktheSendInvoicelinkin

theend-of-auctionemailyoureceived(orontheclosed

auctionpage,oronyourMyeBaypage)todisplaytheSend

InvoicetoBuyerpage,showninFigure21.2.Editthe

paymentinformationandinstructionsasnecessary,and

thenclicktheSendInvoicebuttontoemailthething.

eBayletsyoucombinemultipleauctionsintoa

singleinvoice,forthoseoccasionswhereone

buyerhasmademultiplepurchases.The

auctionsaregroupedbybuyer,soallyouhave

todoisselectalltheauctionsfromasingle

buyertocreateacombinedinvoice.Youcan

evenmanipulatetheshipping/handlingcosts

forthecombinedauctions,inordertooffera

discountformultipleorders.



Alternately,youcanchoosetosendyourownpersonalendof-auctionnoticedirectlytothebuyer.Ifyouoptforthis

method,includeyournameandaddress(sothebuyerwill

knowwheretosendthepayment);youremailaddress(so

thebuyercancontactyouwithanyquestionsorissues);

thetotalamountthebuyerowesyou(thefinalauctionprice

plusshipping/handling);andyourpreferredmethod(s)of

payment.



Youcanalsousevariousauction-managementtoolsto

handleallthispost-auctionmessagingandprocessingfor

you.OneofthemostpopulartoolsiseBaySellingManager;

learnmoreinChapter22,"ManagingYourSaleswitheBay

Ifthebuyerdoesn'tpayimmediately,heshouldatleast

respondtoyourinvoiceorend-of-auctionemail.Ifyouhaven't

heardbackfromthebuyerinadayortwo,sendanotheremail.

If,afterthreedays,youstillhaven'tbeenabletocontactthe

buyer,youcanconsiderthatpersonanon-payingbidder.See

Chapter24,"DealingwithNon-PayingBuyers,"tolearnhowto

dealwiththissituation.

It'simportantforsellerstoknowthatthepostauctiontimeframeiswhenbuyersfeelthemost

vulnerable;theauctionisfinal,theirmoneyisinthe

sellers'hands,andthemerchandisethattheybought

sightunseenhasyettobedelivered.Sellersneedto

understandbuyers'concerns(especiallythoseofnew

orinexperiencedbuyers)andofferexcellentpostauctioncommunicationandcustomerservice.I've

foundthattheultimatesuccessofthetransaction

(andthelikelihoodofreceivingpositivefeedbackand

possiblegainingarepeatcustomer)isdirectly

proportionatetotheamountofcommunicationIhave

withthebuyer.Putyourselfinyourbuyer'sshoes,

andgothatextrastepinmakinghimfeelcomfortable

withhistransaction.







AcceptingPayment

Nowit'stimetogetpaid.AsrecommendedinChapter19,

"AcceptingPayPalandOtherMethodsofPayment,"you've

presumablydeterminedhowyouwanttogetpaid,and

indicatedsoinyouritemlisting.Youneedtorepeatyour

preferredpaymentmethodsinyourpost-auctionemailtothe

highbidder,andthenwaitforthatusertomakethepayment.

Whateveryoudo,donotshiptheitembeforeyou'vereceived

payment!Waituntilyou'vereceivedacashier'scheckormoney

orderinthemail,orbeennotifiedbyPayPalthatapaymenthas

beenmade,andthenpreparetoshiptheitem.

Whenyoureceivepayment,it'sgoodbusinesspracticetoemail

thebuyerandlethimorherknowthatthepaymenthasbeen

received.Ifyouknowwhenyou'llbeshippingtheitem,include

thatinformationintheemail,aswell.

Caution

Remember,ifyoureceiveapaymentviapersonal

check,waitatleast10workingdaysforthatpayment

toclearbeforeyoushiptheitem.



PackingandShipping

Oneofthemostcrucialpartsofthepost-auctionprocessis

packingtheitemyou'vejustsold.Thisprocessissoimportant,

andsocomplicated,thatI'vedevotedanentirechaptertoit.So

whenyou'rereadytopack,turntoChapter23,"Packingand

ShippingYourItemsCheaplyandSafely,"formoreinformation.



FinishingThingsUpandLeavingFeedback

Asyoushipthesolditem,therearetwomorethingsyouneed

todo:

First,sendanemailtothebuyer,lettinghimorherknow

thattheitemisonitsway.(Youshouldnoteinyour

messagewhenandbywhichmethodtheitemwas

shippedandifyouhaveatrackingorconfirmationnumber,

passitalong.)

Second,youneedtoleavefeedbackaboutthebuyer.

Whetheritwasagoodtransactionorabadtransaction,you

needtoletyourfelloweBaymembersknowhowthings

turnedout.

Toleavefeedbackforthebuyer,followtheseinstructions:

1. Gotothelistingpagefortheitemyoujustsoldandclickthe

LeaveFeedbacklink.

2. WhentheLeaveFeedbackpageappears,indicatewhether

you'releavingPositive,Negative,orNeutralfeedback,and

thenenteryourcomments(80characters,maximum)inthe

Commentbox.

3. Makesureyoureallywanttoleavethecommentsyou've

written,andthenclicktheLeaveFeedbackbutton.Your

feedbackwillberegisteredandaddedintothebuyer'sother

feedbackcomments.
