15.1.WhyiDVD?

YoualreadyknowfromChapter11thatyoucanexportyour

finishediMovieprojectbacktoagoodoldVHScassette,oneof

theworld'smostsure-firedistributionmethods.Anyonewho

doesn'thaveaVCRinthisdayandageprobablywouldn't

appreciateyourcinematicgeniusanyway.

ButpreservingyourworkonaDVDgivesyouaboatloadof

benefits:

DVDblanksareinexpensive.Infact,blankDVDs

nowadaysarecheaperthanVHStapes.

DVDsaredurable.VHStapesbegintodeterioratein10to

15years.DVDs,though,arebuilttolastuptoacenturyor

more,ifyoubelievethemanufacturers.Storeyour

recordableDVDsinadark,cool,dryplace,avoidflexing

them,andthey'lllastalifetime.(YourDVDplayerwillstop

workingbeforethediscsdo!)



Tip:They'lllast,thatis,ifyousticktobuyingbrand-name

blankslikeVerbatimandImation.Cheaperbrandsdon'tuse

thesameamountoforganicdyesandaremorelikelyto

sufferprematuredeaths.

DVDsarecompact.YoucanstoreyourDVDcollectionin

small,convenientDVDjewelboxesorinsoft,protective

loose-leafsheathsandyoucancramhundredsoftheminto

thespaceoccupiedbyonly25videotapes.

DVDsneverneedrewinding.Nooneeverhadtopay



BlockbusterfornotrewindingaDVD.Infact,youcanskip

aroundaDVDalmostinstantaneouslyusingthenavigation

buttonsonyourDVDplayer'sremotecontrol.

DVDsarecheaptoship.DVDscostlesstoshipthana

VHStape,andnowonder.Theytakeuplessroom.They

weighless.They'remorerigidandhavezeromovingparts.

Still,therearereasonstopausebeforecommittingyourworkto

DVD.Foronething,homemadeDVDsdon'tworkinasmany

DVDplayersascommerciallypresseddiscsdo.StickaniDVD

productionintoanolderDVDplayer,andyoumayseethe

dreaded"NoDisc"messageontheTVscreen.(Inthisregard,

DVD-RWdiscstheonesthatyoucaneraseandre-recordover

andoverareworsethanDVD-Rs,whichyoucanrecordononly

once.)

DVDplayerssoldsince2002aregenerallyasafebet,butcheck

themasterplayercompatibilitylistatwww.videohelp.comif

you'reeverindoubt.(Someplayersarefussyaboutwhich

DVD-Rbranddiscsthey'llplay,too.Hereagain,stickingwith

brandnameslikeVerbatimisyourbestbet.)



15.1.1.GettingiDVD5

IfyouhaveiMovieHD,thatmeansyoualsohaveiDVD5,

becausetheybothcomeonthesameiLifeDVDfromApple.

InadditiontoaDVDburner,iDVDrequiresaMacwitha733

MHzG4orfasterprocessor,plus256MBofmemoryormore…

preferablyalotmore.Fewprogramsrelyoncomputing

horsepowerasmuchasiDVD,sofastercomputersworkalot

betterthanslowones.

iDVD5alsorequiresMacOSX10.3.4orlatertorun,and

10.3.6orlatertocreatewidescreenDVDs.



15.2.WhatYou'reinFor

Inthefollowingchapters,youcanreadaboutusingiDVD

manually,whereyoucanintegratemovies,stillpictures,and

soundinveryflexibleways.Butespeciallyatfirst,mostpeople

takeoneofthetwosimplestapproaches:(a)createthemovie

iniMovie,andthenhanditofftoiDVD,or(b)burnyourDVD

directlyusingthenewOneStepDVDprocess(page381).

Thischapterguidesyouthroughthefivebroadstepsofusing

iMovieandiDVDtogether:

1. Prepareyouraudio,video,andpictures.

Inadditiontomovies,iDVDcanincorporateaudioand

graphicsfilesintoyourshows.iDVDdoesn't,however,offer

anywaytocreateoreditthesefiles.Youmustprepare

theminotherprogramsfirst.

2. Insertchaptermarkers.

InacommercialHollywoodDVD,youcanjumparoundthe

moviewithoutrewindingorfast-forwarding,thankstothe

movie'sscenemenuorchaptermenu.It'sbasicallya

screenfulofbookmarksforcertainscenesinthemovie.

(OnewaytocreatetheseusefulscenebreaksiniMovieHD

istopositionthePlayheadandthenchooseMarkers Add

ChapterMarker.)

3. HandofftoiDVD.

ThebeautyofiMovieHDandiDVD5isthatthey'retied

togetherbehindthescenes.Theformercanhandoff

moviestothelatter,automaticallycreatingmenubuttonsin

theprocess.

4. Designthemenuscreen.



IniDVDterms,menusdoesn'tmeanmenusthatdropdown

fromthetopofthescreen.Instead,aDVDmenuisamenu

screen,usuallycontainingbuttonsthatyouclickwiththe

remotecontrol.Onebutton,calledPlay,startsplayingthe

movie.Another,calledSceneSelection,mighttakeyoutoa

secondmenuscreenfullofindividual"chapter"buttons,so

youraudiencedoesn'thavetostartwatchingfromthe

beginningiftheydon'twantto.

DVDmenudesignisattheheartofiDVD.Theprogramlets

youspecifywhereandhoweachbuttonappearsonthe

screen,andalsoletsyoucustomizetheoveralllookwith

backgroundsandtitles.

5. BurnyourDVD.

TocreateaDVD,iDVDcompressesyourmovieintothe

universalDVDfileformat,calledMPEG-2,andthencopies

theresultstoablankrecordableDVDdisc.Thisprocess,

calledburning,letsyouproduceaDVDthatplaysback

eitherinacomputerorinmostset-topDVDplayers.



15.3.Phase1:PrepareYourVideo

Forthemostprofessionalresults,prepareyourvideoiniMovie

HD(orsomeothervideo-editingprogram)beforeimportingit

intoiDVD.Hereareacoupleofkeyissuesyoushouldaddress

beforeyoustarttobuildyouriDVDprojects.



15.3.1.SafeColors

Standard-definitionAmericanTVsetsweren'tdesignedto

displayextremelybrightcolors.Highlysaturatedcolors,

especiallyred,"bleed"onmostTVsets,meaningthatthey

seemtoleakoutbeyondtheirnaturalboundariesonthescreen.

Tocounterthisproblem,youcanapplyabrightnesslimiterto

youriMoviefootagebeforeusingitiniDVD.Brightnesslimiters

cutoutthetopandbottom5percentofpossibleillumination

levels,restrictingvideotothemiddle90percentofavailable

colors,therebyensuringyouwon'thavebleedingcolors.



Note:Althoughthiscolor-bleedproblemisspecifictoNTSC

video(thestandardinNorthAmericaandJapan),youcanalso

applycolorlimittechnologytoPALprojects(thestandardin

EuropeandAustralia).Theproblemdoesn'taffectHDTVsets.

Theresultsareverysubtle.Infact,youmightnotevennotice

thedifferenceunlessyouexaminespotsofbrightcolorsinsolid

whitezones.The"after"clipswillbeslightlysubdued,with

grayerwhitesandlessprominentcolors.

15.3.2.SafeZones

Moststandard-definitiontubetelevisionsoverscanto

compensateforthewaypicturetubesageovertime.

OverscanningTVsdisplayonlythecentralportionofthevideo

picture,whileclipping(hiding)therestbehindthebezel(screen

frame).

Inparticular,broadcastersrefertotwodangermarginsofa

videoimage:thetitle-safeareaandtheaction-safearea(see

Figures15-2and15-3).



Tip:Flat-panelTVsetslikeplasmasandLCDsdon'thave

picturetubes,andthereforedon'toverscan.



15.3.3.TheTitle-SafeArea

WhenaTVchopsoffpartsofyourtitle,makingitdifficultor

impossibletoread,youraudiencecan'thelpbutnotice(see

Figure15-2).Asnotedonpage185,youcanmakesurethat

youriMovietitleswillalwaysbesafeintheresultingDVDby

turningofftheQTMarginsboxasyouaddtitlesandcredits.

iMoviewon'tallowthetitletoexpandintotheouter10percent

oneitherside.

15.3.4.TheAction-SafeArea

Professionalbroadcastersalsorefertotheaction-safeareaof

thescreen.It'snotquiteasbroadamarginasthetitle-safe

area,becauseyouraudiencecanusuallyfigureoutwhat'sgoing



oneveniftheactionisslightlyclippedattheouteredgesofthe

screen.Still,it'svitalthatyouractionremainsmostlywithinthe

centralportionofthescreen.

Imagine,forexample,ascience-fictionvideo.Amysterious

enemyteleportsyourheroandhissidekicktoamoonofJupiter.

Thesidekickthrowssomethingtotheherosomethingthatcan

savetheday.InFigure15-3attop,forexample,what'sinthe

hero'shandmaybeobvioustoyou,butmostTVviewerswould

haveahardtimeguessingwhatitisbecauseit'soutsideofthe

action-safezone.

InFigure15-3atbottom,thesidekick'shandandthephonehe

throwsappearcompletelywithintheaction-safezone.Evenif

theTVwindsupchoppingofftheouteredgesofthepicture,the

visualstoryispreserved,andyourherocansafelycallhome.

timeandeffort,andmaydegradethevideoquality.



15.4.Phase2:InsertChapterMarkers

Ifyou'veeverrentedorboughtamovieonDVD,you'realready

familiarwithchapters,betterknownasscenes(Figure15-4).
