9.1.ImportingStillImages

YoumightwanttoimportagraphicsfileintoiMovieforany

numberofreasons.Forexample:

Youcanuseagraphic,digitalphoto,orotherstillimageas

abackdropforiMovie'stitlingfeature(Chapter7).Astill

imagebehindyourtextislessdistractingthanmoving

footage.

YoucanuseagraphicsfileinsteadofusingtheiMovietitling

feature.AsnotedinChapter7,iMovie'stitlingfeatureoffers

anumberofpowerfulfeatures,includinganimation.

However,italsohasanumberofseriouslimitations.

Namely,youcan'tspecifyanytypesizeyoulike,youcan't

usemorethanonefontpertitle,andyouhaveonly

rudimentarycontroloverthetitle'splacementintheframe.

Preparingyourowntitle"slides"in,say,Photoshop

ElementsorAppleWorksgivesyoualotofflexibilitythatthe

iMovietitlingfeaturelacks.Yougetcompletecontrolover

thetypesize,color,andplacement,forstarters.Youcan

alsoaddgraphictouchestoyourtextortothe"slide"on

whichitappears(seeFigure9-1).

Oneofthemostcompellingnewusesofvideoisthevideo

photoalbum:asmoothlyintegratedsuccessionofphotos

(fromyourscannerordigitalcamera),joinedbycrossfades,

enhancedbytitles,andaccompaniedbymusic.Thanksto

iMovie'sabilitytoimportphotosdirectlyeitherfromyour

harddriveorfromyouriPhotocollectioncreatingthiskindof

videoshowisapieceofcake.



Note:Ofcourse,iPhotocancreatevideophotoalbums,too.

AndiniPhoto,youcanopttoloopaslideshow(whichiMovie

can'tdo);rearrangingandregroupingyourphotosismuch

easierthaniniMovie,too.Butbuildingtheminamoviehas

severaladvantages.Firstofall,yourmusicoptionsaremuch

greater;youcanimportmusicstraightfromamusicCD,for

example,orrecordnarrationasyouwatchtheslideshow.You

haveafullarsenaloftoolsforcreatingtitles,credits,and

specialeffects,too.

AsyourlifewithiMovieproceeds,youmayencounterother

usesforthepicture-importingfeature.Maybe,wheneditinga

homemovieofyourkidstusslinginthelivingroom,youdecide

itwouldbehilarioustoinsertsomeBatman-stylefight-sound

titlecards("BAM!")intothefootage.Maybeyouneedan

establishingshotof,say,astorefrontorapartmentbuilding,

andrealizethatyoucouldsaveproductionmoneybyinsertinga

stillphotothatpassesforlivevideoinwhichthere'snothing

moving.Andmaybeyouwanttoendyourmoviewithafadeoutnottoblack,buttomaroon(aneffectdescribedlaterinthis

chapter).

Youhaveadeliciouschoiceoftwomethodsforbringingstill

photosintoaproject.Thefirstandmostconvenientmethodis

tochoosethephotofromamongthoseyou'veorganizedin

iPhoto,usingiMovie'swindowintoyourpicturecollection.If

you'renotusingiPhototoorganizeyourdigitalphotos,youcan

alsousetheoldermethodofimportingpicturesdirectlyfrom

theharddrive.

ThemoreyouworkwithiMovieandiDVD,themoreyou

appreciatetheconvenienceofthewayApplehaslinkedthemto

theotheri-programs,likeiTunesandiPhoto.Here'saclassic

case:

WhenyouclickthePhotosbutton(Figure9-2),you'reshown

whatamountstoiPhotoLite:ascrollingpanelofthumbnail

imagesreflectingthecontentsofyourentireiPhotoLibrary.

Usingthepop-upmenujustabovethethumbnails,youcan

evenlimityourviewtothecontentsofoneiPhotoalbumor

folder.



Tip:Albumsarethecategory"containers"thatyoucancreate



iniPhotobychoosingFile NewAlbum(orbyclickingthe+

buttonatthelower-leftcorner).Youcandragasinglepicture

intoasmanyofthesealbumsasyoulike.Foldersarelarger

Becauseyou'reimportingastillimage,itdoesn'thavea

duration,asamovieclipmight.(Asking"Howmanyseconds

longisaphotograph?"islikeasking,"Whatisthesoundofone

handclapping?")

Still,it'saclip,soiMoviehastoassignitsomeduration.You

canmakeyourgraphicappearonthescreenforaslittleas

threeframes(afavoriteofsubliminaladvertisers)alltheway

upto30seconds(afavoriteofallotheradvertisers).

There'safastwayandaprecisewaytochangethisnumber.

Tip:Whenyougetrightdowntoit,30secondsisplentyoftime

forlookingatoneparticularphoto,nomatterhowgooditis.

Still,ifyouneedittolastlongerperhapsbecauseyou'reusingit

asabackgroundforaseriesofopeningcreditsyoucanalways

overcomethe30-secondlimitbyplacingthesamephotointo

theMovieTrackoverandoveragain,sidebyside,30seconds

longeach.

Nowyoucanusetherabbit/turtle

slidertoadjustthephoto's

typenewnumbersoverthem.



Whenmoreprecisionisrequired,youcanalsotypethenumber

ofsecondsandframesintotheDurationboxtotherightofthe

slider.Youcanuseanumberofshortcutstoeditthenumbersin

thistinybox:

Pressthearrowkeystowalkyourcursorfromonenumber

tothenext.PresstheDeletekeytobackspaceoverthe

numbertotheleftoftheinsertionpoint,ortheforwarddelete(Del)key(ifyourkeyboardhasone)todeletethe

numbertotherightofit.

Double-clicktheportionofthenumberyouwanttochange.

Forexample,ifaclip'sDurationboxsays10:00(10

seconds),double-clickthe10tohighlightit,typethenew

number(suchas07),andpressEnter.(Youmusttypea

leadingzeroinfrontofasingle-digitnumber,orelseyou'll

getanerrormessage.)

Inotherwords,whenefficiencycounts,don'twasteyour

timedeletingthenumbersthatarealreadyintheDuration

box.Instead,double-clickonlytheportionofityouwantto



change,andthentyperightoverthehighlighteddigits.

Similarly,ifyouwanttochangeboththesecondsandthe

frames,dragdirectlyacrosstherightpairofnumbersinthe

box.Typethenewdurationseconds,acolon,andthen

framesandthenpressEnter.

IfyouhighlighttheentireDurationbox(bypressing -A,

forexample,orbychoosingEdit SelectAll),youcan

rapidlyspecifythenewdurationbyjusttypingupthewhole

thing,includingthecolon,likethis:05:15.



9.1.1.2Phase2:SpecifytheKenBurnseffect

IfyouturnontheKenBurnsEffectcheckboxatthetopofthe

Photospanel,youunleashawildandarrestingfeature:the

abilitytopanandzoomsmoothlyacrossphotos,inessence

animatingthemanddirectingtheviewer'sattention.Detailson

page251.

Ifyou'dratherhaveyourphotojustpopontothescreenand

remainstationary,makesurethattheKenBurnscheckboxis

turnedoff.(IfyouplantoexportthemovietoiDVD,however,

youmightwanttoreadpage489tofindoutwhyyou'dwantto

applyKenBurnstoeveryphoto,evenmotionlessones.)



9.1.1.3Phase3:Insertthephoto

Atlastyou'rereadytoputthepictureintothemovie(aphrase

thatwouldhopelesslyconfuseHollywoodexecutiveswho

alreadyrefertomoviesaspictures).Youcandosoineitherof

twoways:

Dragaphotooutofthethumbnailpaletteandintothe



MovieTrack.Theotherclipsscootoutofthewaytomake

room,andthephotobecomes,ineffect,anewsilentvideo

clipwiththedurationyouspecified.(Ifyouturnedonthe

KenBurnseffect,iMovietakesafewmomentstorenderthe

animation.Thefamiliarredprogressbarinchesacrossthe

faceoftheclip.)

Ifyouwantthephototodropintotheendofthemovieas

youmightwhenassemblingaslideshow,onephotoata

timeclicktheApplybutton.



Tip:Speakingofslideshows:Youcanalsodropawholebunch

ofphotosintotheMovieTrackatonce.Selecttheminthe

Photospalettejustasyouwouldclips(page120),thendrag

themenmassedowntotheMovieTrack.OrclickApplytodrop

themallattheendoftheMovieTrack.

Youmaynotice,bytheway,thatblackbarsappearaboveand

below(oralongbothsidesof)certainphotos,creatingthe

traditionalletterboxeffect.Thathappenswhenaphotodoesn't

havetheproportionsthatquirklyoldiPhotoexpects.Seethe

nextpagesforthefix.



9.1.2.ImportingPhotosfromtheHardDrive

Ifyouwanttoincorporategraphicsthataren'tiniPhoto,begin

bymakingsurethatnothumbnailsareselectedinthePhotos

palette.(Ifonethumbnailremainshighlighted, -clickit.)Then

specifythedurationfortheincomingphoto,asdescribedon

page246.Ifyoudon'tintendtoanimateorcropyourphoto,

makesuretheZoomsliderissetto1.0,andthattheKenBurns

checkboxisturnedoff.



Finally,chooseFile ImportFile(orjustpressShift- -I).When

thestandardOpenFiledialogboxopens,navigateyourwayto

thedesktop(orwhereveryouputyourgraphicsfile),and

double-clickthefileitself.Actually,becauseyou'reusingMac

OSX,youcanselectawholebatchofphotostoimport

simultaneously,usingtheShift-clickingand -clicking

techniquesdescribedonpage120.

ThenewphotoshowsupinstantlyintheClipspaneorthe

MovieTrack,dependingonwhereyou'vedirectedincomingclips

togoiniMovie'sPreferencesbox.Onceagain,ifblackbars

appearonthesidesortopandbottomofthephoto,seepage

250.



Tip:iMoviecanimportgraphicsinanyformatthatQuickTime

canunderstand,whichincludesPICT,JPEG,GIF,Photoshop

files,andevenPDFfiles,forwhenanIRSformisexactlywhat

youwanttoillustrateinyourmovie.AvoidtheGIFformatfor

photos,whichlimitsthenumberofcolorsavailabletothe

image.Butotherwise,justaboutanyformatisgoodstill-image

material.

Afteryou'veimportedagraphicsfileintoyourproject,it'sOKto

delete,rename,ormovetheoriginalgraphicsfileyouimported.

iMoviedoesn'tneeditanymore.

Andifyou'vebeenlyingawakeatnight,wonderinghowiMovie

candisplayyourgraphicevenaftertheoriginalfileisgone,look

nofartherthantheMediafolderinsideyourmovie'sprojectfile

(orprojectfolder).Thereyou'llfindcopiesofyourimported

graphicsfiles,withtheiroriginalnamesandatfullresolution(so

thattheKenBurnseffect,ifturnedon,willhaveenough

"margin"toanimateyourphoto).You'llalsofindclipicons

calledStill01,Still02,Still03,andsoon;thesearethe

renderedvideoclips,at640x480resolution,thatiMoviemade.



9.1.3.WorkingwithPhotos

Onceyou'veinstalledthemintheMovieTrack,photosbehavea

lotlikestandardmovieclips.Youcanrenamethem,dragthem

around,clickthemtoviewthemintheMonitorwindow,drag

thembackandforthfromtheClipViewerandClipspane,delete

them,incorporatethemintotitlesortransitions,andsoon.

Youcanalsoadjustthetimingofanimportedpicture.Just

highlightitsicon,adjusttheDurationslider(ortypenew

numbersintotheDurationbox),andthenclicktheUpdate

buttonjustabovethosecontrols.(TheUpdatebuttonappears

onlywhenasinglephotoisselected.Youcan'tchangethe

timingsofmultiplephotosatonce.)

Ifyouhaven'tappliedtheKenBurnseffect(describedlaterin

thischapter),youcanalsochangeaphoto'sdurationby

double-clickingitandthentypinganewdurationintotheClip

Infobox.Usingthismethod,yousaveyourselfaclickonthe

Photosbutton.



Tip:Ifyou'veusedstillimagesinyourmovie,don'teventhink

aboutturningyourprojectintoaDVDuntilyou'vereadthe

troubleshootingstepsonpage489.Otherwise,you'llwindup

withveryjaggedphotos.
