nameorSSID(eventhoughthereisn'tanaccesspoint

involved),andtheymustbeconfiguredforaparticularWiFi

protocol(80.211bor802.11g)andaspecificchannel.

AlthoughAd-HocWiFinetworkingmightseemlikeagoodway

toavoidtheexpenseofaWiFirouter,beadvisedthattheAdHocmodedoesn'tallowyoutogetthemaximumthroughput

availableforacomputer'snetworkadapter.WirelessGadapters

canconnectatupto54Mbps,butAd-Hocmodetypically

providesonly11Mbps.IsuggestthatyouuseAd-Hocmode

onlyinsituationswhereyouwanttoquicklyattachtoanother

WiFi-enabledcomputersothatyoucanswapfilesorsharea

printer.Inthehomenetworksetting,yourWiFirouterprovides

boththenetworkinfrastructureandtheconnectiontoyour

high-speedInternetconnection.



Note

Thetermpeer-to-peernetworkingcanbeconfusingbecauseit

isusedintwodifferentcontexts,bothrelatedtohomeand

smallofficenetworks.Instrictnetworkingterms,apeer-topeernetworkisacollectionofend-usercomputersthatoperate

inanetworksuchasaWindowsworkgroupwherecomputers

onthenetworkcansharefilesandotherresourcessuchas

printers.Thistypeofnetworkdoesnotuseanetworkserver,

andeachresource(includingfilesandprinters)iscontrolledon

thecomputerwheretheresourceresides.Microsoftandother

operatingsystemvendorsconsiderapeer-to-peernetworkto

consistof10orfewercomputers(operatingsystemssuchas

Windowscanonlyaccommodatealimitednumberof

connections10toaparticularresourcesuchasasharedfolderor

aprinterwithoutdeployingaserveronthenetwork).Inthe



caseoftheAd-Hocmode,whichisalsoreferredtoas"peer-topeer"networking,wearetalkingaboutasituationwhereWiFienabledcomputerscancommunicatedirectlywithouttheuseof

aWiFiaccesspoint.



Fortwocomputerstoshareresourceswhencommunicatingin

theAdHocmode,bothcomputersmustbeconfiguredfor

Windowsfileandprintsharingandalsobemembersofthe

sameWindowsworkgroup.Thefileandprintsharingsettings

arefoundinthePropertiesdialogboxforyourWiFiLAN

connection.ToplaceAd-Hocnetworkedcomputersinthesame

workgroup,runtheNetworkSetupWizardfromtheWindows

ControlPanel(see AboutConfiguringPCsfor

Networking).



Tip

ArangeofIPaddresseshasbeenspecifiedforuseonprivate

networks.Therearethreedifferentrangesofaddressesthat

youcanuseforprivatenetworkingsuchasconfiguring

computersforWiFiAdHocmode.Theserangesare10.0.0.0to

10.255.255.255(subnetmask255.0.0),172.16.0.0to

172.31.255.255(subnetmask255.255.0),and192.168.0.0to

192.168.255.255(subnetmask255.255.255.0).Workingwith

IPaddressesandsubnetmasksandunderstandingsomeofthe

nuancesassociatedwithIPaddressclassescanbeconfusing.

AnotherimportantsettingrequiredforaWiFiadapterto

functioninAd-HocmodeisastaticIPaddress.Thismeansthat

anIPaddressmustbeassignedtothecomputerratherthan

allowingthecomputertoreceiveitsIPaddressfromtheWiFi

router,whichalsoactsasaDHCPserver(aserverthatsupplies

IPaddressesdynamicallytocomputersonthenetwork).You

specifytheIPaddress(andsubnetmask)foraLANconnection

suchasaWiFiadapterintheTCP/IPPropertiesdialogbox

forthatnetworkadapter.

TheactualstepsforconfiguringtheAd-Hocmodeona

computervarydependingonthesoftwareutilityprovidedwith

yourWiFiadapter.



ConfigureAdapterforComputer-to-Computer

Networking



EnterSSIDforPeer-to-PeerNetwork

OntheconfigurationscreenofyourWiFiadapter'ssoftware

utility(starttheutilityfromthenotificationareaontheright

endofthetaskbar),typeanetworkname,alsocalledits

SSID,foryourpeer-topeer/Ad-Hocnetwork.Youcanuseany

nameyouwantfortheAd-Hocnetwork'sSSID.Youhave32

alphanumericcharactersavailable(donotusespaces).For

example,youcouldcalltheAd-HocSSIDjoeandkimtolet

youknowthatthisistheconnectionyouusetoconnect

betweenJoe'sandKim'sWiFi-enabledcomputers.Ifyouuse

thisconnectionoften(say,wheneveryouareawayfromthe

homeWiFinetwork),savetheAd-Hocsettingsasa

configurationprofile.BecauseyourinfrastructureandAd-Hoc

networksareseparateentities,youarenotactually

dedicatingtheIPaddressesandothersettingstotheWiFiAdHocnetworkyouareconfiguring.YoucanusethesameIP

addressesandothersettingsforasmanyAd-Hocnetworksas

youcaretoconfigure.Justrememberthatnotwocomputers

ontheAd-HocnetworkcanhavethesameIPaddress.



SelectAd-HocMode

SelectAd-Hocmodeintheconfigurationwindow.For

example,intheNetgearconfigurationutility,clickthe

ComputertoComputer(AdHoc)optionbutton.

EnterAd-HocModeSettings

Ad-HocmodesettingsincludetheWiFiprotocoltobeused

(802.11bor802.11g)andthechanneltobeusedforthe

transmission.TospecifythesesettingswhenusingaNetgear

adapter,clicktheInitiateAdHocbuttonandusethedropdownboxesontheAdHocSettingdialogboxtospecifythe

WiFiprotocolandchannel,thenclickOK.

ToconfiguretheIPaddresssettingsforacomputerusingthe

WiFiAd-Hocmode,youusetheInternetProtocol

(TCP/IP)Propertiesdialogbox.Thisdialogboxprovides

theoptionofconfiguringfixedIPaddresses(suchasthose

neededbytheAd-Hocmode)andtheoptionofreceivingthe

IPaddressingautomaticallyfromadevicesuchasyourWiFi

router.Checkout ConfigureTCP/IPSettingsformore

aboutconfiguringIPaddressesandsubnetmasks.



ApplyWiFiNetworkSettings

ToapplytheAd-Hocsettingsandconnecttothenewpeerto

peernetwork,clickApply.Repeatthesestepsonthesecond

WiFi-enabledcomputerusingthesamesettingsforboth

computerssothatthetwocomputerscancommunicateover

thenewadhocnetwork.

TotakeadvantageoftheAd-Hocnetwork,opentheNetwork

NeighborhoodfromtheStartmenuandthenbrowsefor



thecomputerscurrentlyavailableinyourworkgroup.Doubleclicktoopenthecomputerthatprovidesasharedresource

suchasprinterorfolderthatyouwanttoaccess.Theprinter

orfoldershouldappearasasharedresource.

AboutConfiguringtheWirelessAdapter



Itisquitelikelythatyouwillhavemultipleconfigurationsfor

yourWiFinetworkadapteraconfigurationforyourhome

network,perhapsaconfigurationforaWiFinetworkatwork,

andanAd-Hocconfigurationforpeer-to-peernetworking.

YoucansaveyourvariousconfigurationsforyourWiFiadapter

asprofiles,whichallowyoutoquicklyloadaparticular

collectionofconfigurationsettingswhenyouwanttoconnectto

thatWiFinetwork.



KeyTerm

ConfigurationProfileAsetofconfigurationoptionsforyour

WiFinetworkadapterthathavebeensavedunderaprofile

name.Savingtheprofileallowsyoutoquicklyrecallthese

settingsatanytimefromtheWiFiadapter'sconfiguration

CreateConfigurationProfiles



ConfigureWiFiNetworkSettingsandNameProfile

IntheWiFiadapter'sconfigurationutilitywindow(startthe

utilityfromtheNotificationareaattherightendofthe



TaskbarorfromtheStartmenu),settheconfiguration

parameters(theSSID,accesspoint,orAdHocmodeandso

on)fortheWiFinetworkconnection.Typeanameforthenew

profilewhereindicated(inthisexampleusingtheNetgear

utility,typethenameoftheprofileintheProfilestextbox).

Intermsofnamingconventions,theprofileisstoredlocally,

soyoudonothavetoworryaboutredundantlynamed

profilesonotherWiFi-enabledcomputersonyournetwork.

Theprofilecanbeasdescriptiveasnecessaryandcaninclude

spacesinthename.

SaveProfile

ClickSaveProfile(oranothersimilarlynamedbutton)to

savethenewprofile.Allthesettingsyouconfiguredforthe

WiFinetworkadaptertoaccessthecurrentnetworkaresaved

inthisprofilewiththedesignatedname.OtherWindows

settingssuchasthecurrentworkgroupandtheTCP/IP

settingsarenotsavedaspartofthisprofile.Switchingfroma

WiFinetworktoanotherWiFinetwork(suchasfroman

infrastructuretoanAd-Hocnetwork)mightrequirethatother

settingsbechangedonthecomputerbeforeyoucanattach

tothespecifiedWiFinetwork.

SelectProfile

Thenexttimeyouwanttoaccessaparticularnetwork,you

cansimplyselecttheprofileforthatnetworkratherthan

manuallyconfiguringalltheappropriatesettingsagain.To

selectaprofile(whichconnectsthecomputertotheWiFi

networkspecifiedintheprofile),opentheadapter'ssoftware

utility(asdescribedinstep1),opentheProfilesdrop-down

list,andselecttheprofileforthenetworktowhichyouwant

toconnect.Thenapplytheconfigurationprofile.Inthecase

oftheNetgearconfigurationsoftware,IclicktheApply

button.Whenyouconnecttothenetwork,amessageballoon

appearsnexttothenotificationareaiconforyournetwork

adapter.

InstallAdapterSoftwareUtility

CheckWiFiAdapterInstallation



ForyourWiFinetworkadaptertooperatecorrectly,the

appropriatesoftwaredrivermustbeinstalled.Mostproblems

withhardwaredevicesaretypicallyrelatedtothesoftware

driver.



Note

Itisnottotallyuncommonforanadapter'smanufacturerto

updatethesoftwarethatisavailableforaparticularWiFi

adapter.Youshoulddefinitelycheckthemanufacturer'swebsite

everynowandthentoseewhetherupdatestoyournetwork

adapterareavailable.Updatedsoftwareutilitiesforadevice

oftenprovidenewfeaturesorreworkthesoftwaretomakethe

deviceeasiertoconfigureandmanage.



YourWiFiadaptercomeswithaCD(orothermedia)that

providesadriverandsoftwareutilitiesforthedevice.

Sometimes,thedrivershippedwithadevicedoesn'tprovidethe

appropriatefunctionalityforthedevice.Ifyouareexperiencing

problemswithaWiFiadapter,youshouldcheckthe

manufacturer'swebsitetoseewhetheranew(revised)driveris



availableforyouradapter.

ThetasksinthischapterusedtheNetgearWG111v2Wireless

USB2.0AdaptertoshowhowaWiFiadapterisinstalledand
