WhetheryouusetheWindowsWirelessConnectionutilityor

theconfigurationsoftwarethatcamewithyourWiFiadapter,

youmustconfiguretheWiFiadaptertoconnecttoyourWiFi

network(specifically,toyourWiFirouter).Becausewehavenot

discussedsecuringthenetworkwithWEPorWPAatthispointin

ourdiscussionofWiFi,theonlyrealconfigurationitemsthat

mustbesetuponyourWiFinetworkadapteraretoselect

infrastructuremodeandtoenterthecorrectSSIDforyourWiFi

network(asconfiguredontheWiFirouter).Thisconfiguration

canbehandledautomaticallybyscanningforandthen

attachingtotheWiFirouter(sincesecurityhasnotyetbeen

enabled)orbyselectingtheInfrastructuremodeandthen

manuallytypingtheSSIDintotheWiFiadapter'sconfiguration

(asoutlinedinthistask).

ThestepsforconfiguringyourWiFiadapterdependonthe

softwareutilityprovidedbyyouradapter'smanufacturer.

Bottomline:Youmusteitherscanfororidentifyyournetwork

byitsSSID.Youalsomustprovideanysecuritypassphrasesor

encryptionkeysthatyouconfiguredontherouteriftheadapter

isgoingtosuccessfullyconnecttotheWiFirouter.

OpenAdapterConfigurationSoftware

IdentifytheiconforyourWiFiadaptersoftwareutilityinthe

notificationareaofthetaskbar.Right-clicktheiconandselect

Openfromthecontextmenu.Theconfigurationutilityfor

yourWiFiadapteropens.

SelectInfrastructureMode



Clicktheappropriateoptionbuttonorcheckbox(depending

onyourconfigurationsoftware)toselectInfrastructure

mode.Forexample,formyNetgearWiFiadapter

configurationutility,IselecttheAccessPoint

(Infrastructure)optionundertheNetworkTypecategory.

EnterNetworkSSID

TypetheSSIDforyournetwork(theSSIDyouspecifiedwhen

configuringtheWiFirouter,asexplainedin Configure

RouterWirelessSettings)intheappropriatetextboxin

yourconfigurationutilitywindow.



Tip

Ifyoudon'tremembertheSSID,usethesoftwareutility's

scanfeaturetoscanforWiFinetworkswithinrange.Youcan

thenselectyournetworkfromthelistprovided.Ifyou

configuredanysecuritysettingsontherouter,youmust

providethepassphraseorencryptionkeystoactually

connecttotherouter.TogetstartedwithsecurityontheWiFi

router,see AboutBasicNetworkSecurity.



ApplySettingsandConnecttoRouter

ClicktheApplybuttontoapplythesettingstoyourWiFi

adapterandtoconnecttotheWiFinetworkusingyour

router/accesspoint.Ifyoucannotconnecttothenetwork,

proceedtostep5.

OrScanforWiFiNetworkandConnect

IfyoudonotwanttomanuallyconfiguretheWiFiadapter,

youcanscanforyourWiFinetworkandconnect

automatically.Afteryouenablesecurityfeaturesonyour

router(suchasWEPorWPA),anyattempttoautomatically



connectrequiresthatyouenterthepasskeyforthesecurity

optionenabledontherouter.Afteryouenablesecurity

featuresontheWiFirouter,manuallyconfiguringtheWiFi

adapterandsavingtheconfigurationasaprofileisyourbest

bet.

SelecttheScanoptionforyourWiFiadapter'sconfiguration

software;forexample,theNetgearutilitysoftwarerequires

thatIclicktheNetworkstabonthesoftwarewindowand

thenselectScan.AlistofavailableWiFinetworksappears;

selectyourWiFinetwork(ifyouseemorethanonenetwork

listed,itmeansthatotherWiFinetworksareinoperation

nearby)andthenclickConnect.Youshouldbeconnectedto

yourWiFinetwork.



Tip

Ifyoudon'tseeyourWiFinetworkwhenyouusetheScan

feature,youmightnothavetheWiFirouterconfigured

correctly.Checkyourrouterconfigurationtomakesurethatyou

haveSSIDbroadcaststurnedonandthattherouterisenabled

YoucanconfigureyourWiFinetworkadapterforAd-Hoc

mode(alsocalledpeer-to-peernetworking).Thismeansthat

youusetheWiFiadaptertodirectlyconnecttoothercomputers

thatalsohaveWiFiadaptersandhavebeenconfiguredforpeerto-peerorAd-Hocnetworking.Communicatingthiswayallows

thecomputerstosharefilesandotherdevicessuchasprinters.

ConnectingtwocomputersinAd-Hocmodeissimilarto

attachingtwocomputerswithasinglecrossovercable.Thetwo

computerscancommunicatebecauseanetworkmedium

attachesthem.WiFinetworkingusesradiosignals,whicharein

effectthesameasaLANcable.So,Ad-Hocmodeisavailable

becausethetwo(ormorecomputers)canbeattachedinvisibly

byconfiguringthemforthesameWiFiradiochannel.



ToconfigureaWiFi-enabledcomputerforpeer-to-peer



networking,youconfigurethecomputer'sWiFiadapterforAdHocmode.TheAd-Hocmodedoesn'trequireaWiFirouteror

accesspointtoconnecttoanothercomputerthathasalsobeen

configuredfortheAd-Hocmode.BothcomputersusingtheAd

Hocmodemustalsobeconfiguredtouseaparticularnetwork

nameorSSID(eventhoughthereisn'tanaccesspoint

involved),andtheymustbeconfiguredforaparticularWiFi

protocol(80.211bor802.11g)andaspecificchannel.

AlthoughAd-HocWiFinetworkingmightseemlikeagoodway

toavoidtheexpenseofaWiFirouter,beadvisedthattheAdHocmodedoesn'tallowyoutogetthemaximumthroughput

availableforacomputer'snetworkadapter.WirelessGadapters

canconnectatupto54Mbps,butAd-Hocmodetypically

providesonly11Mbps.IsuggestthatyouuseAd-Hocmode

onlyinsituationswhereyouwanttoquicklyattachtoanother

WiFi-enabledcomputersothatyoucanswapfilesorsharea

printer.Inthehomenetworksetting,yourWiFirouterprovides

boththenetworkinfrastructureandtheconnectiontoyour

high-speedInternetconnection.

Thetermpeer-to-peernetworkingcanbeconfusingbecauseit

isusedintwodifferentcontexts,bothrelatedtohomeand

smallofficenetworks.Instrictnetworkingterms,apeer-topeernetworkisacollectionofend-usercomputersthatoperate

inanetworksuchasaWindowsworkgroupwherecomputers

onthenetworkcansharefilesandotherresourcessuchas

printers.Thistypeofnetworkdoesnotuseanetworkserver,

andeachresource(includingfilesandprinters)iscontrolledon

thecomputerwheretheresourceresides.Microsoftandother

operatingsystemvendorsconsiderapeer-to-peernetworkto

consistof10orfewercomputers(operatingsystemssuchas
