OverviewofDeploymentScenarios

SSRShastwomaindeploymentscenarios.Thefirstispossibly

thesimplestthesingle-serverdeployment.Inthisscenario,a

singlemachineisresponsibleforhostingbothmajor

componentsofSSRSthedatabaseandtheReportServer.

Thesecondmajorscenarioisthescale-outdeployment,in

whichthedatabaseisononemachine,possiblyaclustered

virtualmachine,andtheReportServerisonanothermachine

oronawebfarm.



Advantages/DisadvantagesoftheStandard

Model

Thestandardmodel,orsingle-serverdeploymentmodel,might

soundsimpleandeasytodoatfirst,anditiscertainlytheway

todoitforadevelopmentworkstation,orasimpletrialorproof

ofconcept.However,youshouldconsideracoupleofthings

whendebatingwhethertousethismodelinaproduction

environment.



PerformanceImpactoftheStandardModel

Theprimaryconsiderationformostadministratorsaftercostis

performance.HavingboththedatabaseandtheReportServer

onthesamemachinemightsoundtemptingonthefinancial

frontbecauseSSRSisincludedwiththeSQLServerRelational

Engine;however,boththerelationalengineandReportServer

loveRAMandCPUcycles.SSRSisgoingtousealltheRAMit

cangetorwhateveritneeds(thelowerofthetwonumbers)to

renderareport.Renderingreports,andespeciallyrendering



largereports,alsochewsuplotsofCPUcycles.Addingthis

overheadtoanoldermachinethatisalreadystrugglingwiththe

databaseserverisnotadvisable.



DiskSpaceRequirementsforSSRS

AnyonewhohasknownaDBA,orwhohasbeenone,knows

thereisonethingallDBAslovestorage.Theyjustcan'tseemto

getenoughofit,evenintoday'senvironmentswithlarge

StorageAreaNetworks(SANs)andhundredsofspindlesthe

DBAalwayswantsmore.Thisisforgoodreason.

SSRS,likemostdatabases,installswithaverysmallfootprint.

It'salmost,andpossiblyis,negligible.However,dependingon

howSSRSisused,thediskspacerequirementscangrowpretty

large.TounderstandhowspaceisusedinsidetheSSRS

database,anoverviewofthedifferenttypesofobjectsandhow

theyarestoredisrequired.

Bynow,itshouldbeunderstoodthattheSSRSdatabaseholds

theRDLfiles,datasources,models,andallmetadata,suchas

foldersandaccesscontrollists(ACLs).Thismightseemlikea

lottostore,but,inreality,thisisrathersmall,andonlyinthe

mostextremecasesshouldthiscauseissues.Sessionstate

informationforSSRSisstoredintheReportServertemporary

database.Becauseonlyonerowisgeneratedperusersession,

thisshouldnotgetverylarge,andgrowsatapredictablerate.

Otherthingsstoredinthedatabasecan,however,growtobe

verylarge.Resourcesforreportsarestoredinthecatalogasa

binarylargeobject(BLOB).It'sasurebetthatyourfriendly

neighborhoodDBAhatesBLOBs.WhenaBLOBisstoredinitially

withthereportRDL,itmightnotbesuchabigdeal;however,if

aresourceisstoredaspartofareportinanarchivesolution,

thiscangetverylargeveryquickly.Cachedreportsor

temporarysnapshotsarestoredintheReportServertemporary



databaseasaBLOBinintermediateformat.Becausecached

reportsincluderawqueryresults,theBLOBcangetpretty

large.Anotherdiskspaceconsiderationwhenusingcached

reportswithparameterizedreportsisthataseparatecopyof

thecachedreportisgeneratedforeachcombinationofreport

parameters.Thebottomlineisthatifyouareusingtemporary

snapshots,preparetousediskspace.Onthesametokenas

temporarysnapshotsarereporthistorysnapshots.Theonly

differencebetweenthemisthatreporthistoryissavedinside

theReportServerdatabaseandnottheReportServer

temporarydatabase.



AvailabilityImpactofStandaloneDeployment

Iftheperformanceimpactofthesingle-serverdeploymentcan

beshruggedoff,theavailabilityimpactofitcan'tbe.Having

onemachinebethecentraldatastoreandReportServer

createsasinglepointoffailureinanenterpriseenvironment.

Thismakeshavingabackupessentialtosavethesystemfrom

someunforeseencalamity.Notmuchmorecanbesaidaboutit.

Itisuptotheadministratortodecidehowcriticalthe

functionalitySSRSprovidesis.Ifitcanbedownforasmuch

timeasneededtorestorefromtape,orifSSRSisnotyet

importantenoughtobedeployedinaredundantmanner,thena

standalonedeploymentshouldsuffice.



Advantages/DisadvantagesoftheScale-Out

Model

Thescale-outmodelofdeploymenthastwomainadvantages

overthestandalonemodelperformanceandavailability.

However,ithasonemajordownsidecost.Becauseinthescaleoutmodel,thedatabaseserverisseparatefromthewebserver,

theperformancepenaltyofcombiningthedatabaseenginewith



theReportServer'srenderingenginegetsnullified.Inaddition,

thedatabasecanbeclusteredinavirtualservertoprovidea

highlyavailability.

WithmodernSANtechnologies,thedatabasecanevenbe

replicatedtoaremotesite.SSRS'sapplicationserverlivesona

separateserver.Theserverissimplythefirstnodeinwhat

couldbecomeanetworkloadbalanced(NLB)cluster.The

clustergivestheabilitytoscaleoutforperformance/availability

orboth.Scalingoutalsohelpswithdispersingtheworkload

generatedbyscheduledsubscriptionsbecauseeachmachineon

theclusterlooksforeventsthattriggerasubscriptionto

process.Theclusteralsoallowsonenodetoberemovedfor

upgrades/maintenanceandthenbeplacedbackonlinewhen

themaintenanceiscomplete.



Note

NLBclustersarenotafunctionofSSRS;rather,

theyareafunctionoftheOSorhardware.

SSRSisjustanapplicationthatcanbeplaced

onanexistingNLBcluster.



Allofthisflexibilitycomesatapriceliterally.Theonlyeditionsto

supportascale-outdeploymentareDeveloperandEnterprise

Editions.MicrosoftdoesnotoffersupportforDeveloperEdition,

anddoesnotlicenseitforuseinaproductionenvironment.

Second,everymachineinascale-outdeploymenthastobe

licensedseparatelyforEnterpriseEdition.Morethananything,

thecostofascaleoutiswhatkeepsmostshopsfromadopting

it.







RequirementsforaStandardDeployment

Inastandarddeployment,thewebserver/applicationserver

andthedatabaseserverareinstalledonthesamemachine.For

thisreason,itisimportantthattheminimumhardware

requirementsbemetorexceeded.Itisalsohelpfultohavethe

NETBIOSnameorIPaddressoftheSimpleMailTransfer

Protocol(SMTP)serverhandyaswellastheserviceaccount

usedtoexecutethereportsinunattendedmodeandthe

credentialswithwhichtologintothedatabase.

Aftercollectingallthenecessaryinformation,youjustneedto

runsetupandconfiguretheReportServer.Soundseasy,

doesn'tit?Whilerunning,theinstallationprogramofferstwo

mainoptions.Thefirstoptionisthedefaultinstallation.Thisis

theoptionusedforrunningthestandarddeployment.This

optionsetsupthedatabaseserverandtheReportServeron

thesamemachine.ThesecondoptioniscalledtheFilesOnly

option.Thisoptionisusedprimarilyinscale-outdeployments.

Forthebraveorsimplycurious,thisoptioncanbeusedtoset

upSSRSlocally;however,theadministratormustrunthe

ReportServicesConfigurationToolaftertheinstallcompletes

andconfiguretheoptionsherself.



RequirementsforaScale-OutDeployment

Asyouhaveseenearlierinthischapter,SSRScanbedeployed

inascale-outfashiononawebfarm.Eachmachineintheweb

farmrunsboththecorrectwebserverorwebsitetohostthe

reportserverandtheSQLServerReportingServices.Asanyone

whohasmanagedawebfarmknows,intheoryanymachineon

thefarmshouldbeeasilyreplaceablewithanotherinthesame

configuration,andstatecannotbestoredonanyboxonthe

farm.SSRSaccomplishesthistaskbyusingdatasource

configurationinformationandreportsinsidetheReportServer

database.Theapplicationserversjustneedtoregister

themselveswiththedatabaseserver.Thismightsoundsimple,

butitisnottrivial.Luckily,SSRS2005hasgivenadministrators

muchbettertoolstoaidinthisconfigurationprocess.



OverviewofReportServerInitialization

BecauseSSRSusespotentiallysensitiveinformation,itis

importanttosecureitappropriately.Thisiscompoundedbythe

factthatinascale-outsituationmultipleReportServersneedto

encryptandunencryptthedatastoredinthedatabase.To

understandhowSSRSaccomplishesthis,youneedabitof

knowledgeaboutencryptionandencryptiontechniques.

Ingeneral,therearetwokindsofencryptionsymmetricand

asymmetric.Symmetricisveryfastbecauseitusesonlyone

possiblekeytoencryptandunencryptthedata.However,this

formofencryptionhasitsdrawbacks.Howcanyoushare

informationthathasbeenencryptedwiththesymmetrickey

withoutcompromisingthekey?Theansweristouse

asymmetricencryption.Asymmetricencryptionusesa

combinationofkeys,onepublicandoneprivate.Thepublickey

canbesharedwithanotherhostandcanbeusedtodecrypt



messagesencryptedwiththeprivatekey.Thesamecanbesaid

fortheprivatekey.Asymmetricencryptionisrelativelyvery

slow,soitshouldnotbeusedtoencrypt/unencryptfrequently.

SSRSusesbothtypesofencryptioninasimple,yetintelligent

way.ForeveryReportServerdatabase,SSRSgeneratesa

uniquesymmetrickeythatcanthenbeusedtoencryptthe

data.Atthispoint,everyReportServerthatneedsaccessto

thedatamustpublishitspublicasymmetrickeyalongwithits

uniqueinstallationIDandclientIDtotheReportServer

database.TheReportServerdatabasethenusesthepublic

asymmetrickeytoencrypttheinternalsymmetrickeyand

shareitwiththeclient.Afterbeingencryptedwiththeclient's

publicasymmetrickey,thesymmetrickeycannotbedecrypted

byanyoneelsewithouttheprivatekey.Administratorscan

actuallywatchthisprocessunfoldbywatchingthechangesin

theKeystableduringtheactivationprocess.Theprocessof

exchangingpublickeysandsymmetrickeysiscalledactivation.

Activationisatwo-phaseprocess.Thefirstphaseisthe

AnnounceSelfphase,andthesecondphaseistheActivated

phase.TheAnnounceSelfphasecoversthereadingofthekeys

fromtheKeystablesand,ifneeded,thewritingoftheclient's

publickeytotheKeystable.TheActivatedphaseisthetime

theReportServergetsthesymmetrickeyinencryptedform.



Note

Becausetheprivatekeysarestoredunderthe

user'sprofileinSSRS,changingtheuserthe

servicerunsundercouldforceareactivation.



Theprocessofaddingandremovingmachinesinthescale-out

deploymentmodelissimplytheprocessofrunningactivation



overagain.ThesameistruefortakinganSSRSinstallationand

pointingittoadifferentdatabase.



StepstoSetUpSSRSinaScale-Out

Configuration

SSRSrequiresanexistingNLBorservercluster.Itdoesnot

createorsetoneupforyou.ThebasicstepstosetupascaleoutconfigurationincludeinstallingSSRSonthenode,

configuringthenode,andfinishingtheconfigurationbyediting

theconfigurationfiles.

ThefollowingstepsstarttheinstallofSSRSonanodeofanew

servercluster:

1. RunSSRSsetuponthenodethatwillbecomepartofthe

cluster.Thecriticalstephereistodoafileonlyinstallation.

WhenusingtheSQLServerInstallationWizard,thisoption

islabeledInstallButDoNotConfiguretheServer.

2. RuntheSQLServerSurfaceAreaConfigurationToolto

configuretheReportServer.TheReportServerservice

mustbeupandrunningforthistoworkbecauseitiswhat

registerstheinstallationwiththeReportServerdatabase.

3. OpentheReportingServicesConfigurationManager.

4. ConfigurethevirtualdirectoriesforusebytheReport

ServerandReportManager.Inmostscale-out

deployments,thisshouldbeidenticalonallmachines.

5. ContinuetotheDatabaseSetuppageandenterorselect

thenameoftheSQLServerdatabaseinstancetoconnect

to.ClickConnecttoconnecttotheinstanceandretrieve

thelistofrunningdatabases.Tocreateanewdatabase,



clickNew.ThenewdatabaseiscreatedwiththeIDof

whoeverisrunningtheconfigurationtool.

6. EnterthecredentialsforSSRStousetologintothe

database.

7. 7.ClickApplyforSSRStoconnecttothedatabaseand

completetheactivationprocess.

8. ClicktheEncryptionKeystabandmakeabackupofthe

SymMetrickey.

9. ClicktheInitializationtab,andmakesuretheInitialized

checkboxischecked.Ifitisnot,clicktheInitializebutton.

10. Continuetoentertheemailsettingsandunattended

executionaccount.Atthispoint,youcanverifythatthe

ReportServerisoperationalbyrequestingapagefromthe

ReportServervirtualdirectory(/ReportServer).Repeatsteps

1-10foreveryserverinawebfarm.

11. Openthersreportsserver.configfileandchangethe

tagtousetheclusternameinsteadofthemachine's

physicalname.

12. Opentherswebapplication.configfileandchangethe

tagtousetheclusternameinsteadofthe

machine'sphysicalname.



Toaddnodestoanexistingcluster,followthesesteps:

1. RunSSRSsetuponthenodethatwillbecomepartofthe

cluster.Thecriticalstephereistodoafileonlyinstallation.

WhenusingtheSQLServerInstallationWizard,thisoption

islabeledInstallButDoNotConfiguretheServer.



2. RuntheSQLServerSurfaceAreaConfigurationToolto

configuretheReportServer.TheReportServerservice

mustbeupandrunningforthistoworkbecauseitiswhat

registerstheinstallationwiththeReportServerdatabase.

3. OpentheReportingServicesConfigurationManager.

4. ConfigurethevirtualdirectoriesforusebytheReport

ServerandReportManager.Inmostscale-out

deployments,thisshouldbeidenticalonallmachines.

5. ContinuetotheDatabaseSetuppageandenterthename

oftheSQLServerdatabaseinstancetoconnectto.Click

Connecttoconnecttotheinstanceandretrievethelistof

runningdatabases.Toconnecttoanexistingdatabase,

clickUpgrade.Allnodesonthesamescale-outdeployment

mustpointtothesamedatabase.

6. EnterthecredentialsforSSRStousetologintothe

database.

7. OntheInitializationtab,theentryforthenewnodeshould

exist,buttheInitializedcheckboxshouldnotbechecked.

8. LaunchtheReportServerConfigurationToolonamachine

thathasalreadybeeninitialized.

9. OntheInitializationtab,selectthemachinethatistobe

addedtothescale-outconfigurationandselectJoin.Atthis

point,theInitializedcheckboxshouldappearforboth

machinesintheconfiguration.

10. 10.Opentherswebapplication.configandthe

rsreportserver.configfilesandchangetheand



thetags,respectively,tostatetheclustername

insteadofthenetworkname.

TouseASP.NETwithawebfarm,the

validationKeyanddecryptionKeyshouldbethesame

oneverymachineinthewebfarm.Detailsof
