BeforeyoudisableUAC,youshouldunderstandtherisks

involved,justasyoushouldbeforedisablinganytypeof

securityfeature.Youmightthink:"WhydoIevenneedthese

alertsaskingifIauthorizedtheaccessofacertainareawhen

I'mtheonewhotoldthecomputertoaccessitinthefirst

place?"Theansweristhatthealertsnotifyyouthatyou're

performinganactionthatcouldputyourcomputeratrisk.More

important,UACsoundsthealarmincaseyourcomputerhas

beenbreachedbyahacker,virus,orotherInternetnasty.

Therefore,whendisablingthisfeature,youareexposingyour

computertosomeadditionalrisk,thoughtypicallyminimal.The

bottomlineisthatyoushouldnotdisableUACunlessyouare

awareoftherisksandarecomfortabletakingthoserisks.Itis

notrecommendedforbeginnerstodisableUAC.

AusefulfeatureoftheUACpop-upsisthatother

nonadministratorWindowsaccounts(suchasanaccountyou

wouldsetupforyourchildrenorotherfamilymembersusing

yourPC)can'taccessareasprotectedbytheUACpop-ups.

WhenaUACpop-upappearsonanonadministratorWindows

account,apasswordforanadministratormustbegivenbefore

accesstotheareaisauthorized.Thisisagreatfeatureifyou

havechildrenorotherswhomyoudon'twanttobeableto

changesystemsettings.Ifyoustillwanttodisablethealertsfor

yourself(andanyotherAdministratoraccounts),butkeepit

activeforotherusers,see#90,"DisableUACPop-upAlertsfor

OnlyAdministrators,"ratherthancontinuingwiththisone.

TodisableUACforallusers:

1. OpentheStartmenuandselectControlPanel.

2. Double-clickUserAccounts.

3. ClicktheTurnUserAccountControlOnorOfflink,asshown

inFigure6.48.

4. UnchecktheUseUserAccountControl(UAC)toHelpProtect

YourComputercheckbox,asshowninFigure6.49,andclick

OK.

5. Apop-upshouldappearstatingarestartisrequiredtoapply

thechanges.Specifywhethertorestartnoworlater.UAC

alertswillcontinuetoappearuntilyourestart.

BeverycarefulwheneditingyourWindows

Registry.Mistakescouldcausemajorproblems,

includingmakingyourPCunbootable.Before

makinganychangestotheRegistry,makesure

youbackitupfirst.

1. OpentheRegistryEditorbyfollowingsteps1

and2.

2. IntheRegistryEditor,clickFileonthemenu

andselectExport.

3. Onthebottomofthedialogbox,selecttheAll

optionfortheExportRange.

4. Browse,find,andselectalocationtosavethe

registry.It'sbesttosaveittoaremovable

storagedevicelikeaflashdrive,floppydisc,or

CD.



5. Enteryourdesiredfilename,suchas

Registry_Backup_DATE.

6. ClickSaveandwaituntilit'sdonewhichmay

takeafewminutes.



90.DisableUACPop-upAlertsforOnly

Administrators

Asmentionedintheprecedingtopic,youcandisabletheUAC

pop-upalertsforWindowsaccountadministratorswhilekeeping

themactiveforotheraccounts,whichisusefulifyouhave

childrenorothernontechiesyoudon'twanttohaveaccessto

systemsettings.Disablingthealertsforspecificusers,however,

requireseditingtheWindowsRegistry.
