Theresultsappearhere;double-clicktheoneyouwanttoopen.



Theresultswillbesortedwiththemostfrequentlyopened

itemsontop.Themoreyoutype,thenarrowertheresults.This

way,youdon'talwayshavetotypetheentirenamebefore



findingwhatyouwant.

Bydefault,theSearchfunctionwillsearchcommunications

(emailmessages,savedinstantmessages,appointments,and

contacts),webfavoritesandhistory,userfiles(personal

folders),andprograms.Ifyouwant,youcandisableanyof

thesemainsearchcategoriesandyoucanchoosetosearchthe

entirefileindexratherthanjusttheuserfiles.

Here'showtoaccessthesearchpreferences:

1. Right-clickonthetaskbarandselectProperties.

2. ClicktheStartMenutab.

3. ClicktheCustomizebuttonnexttotheStartMenuoption.

4. Scrolldowntoseethesearchoptions,asshowninFigure

6.25.

5. MakeyourdesiredchangesandclickOKtoexit.

Tip

Keepinmindthatyoucanalsousethenewsearch

capabilitiesoftheStartmenutoaccessmany

itemsyouusewiththeRunprompt.

Forexample,youcouldsimplytype"msconfig"

(withoutthequotes)intotheStartmenuSearch

boxandpressEnter,ratherthanaccessingthe



Runprompt,whichisnowlocatedinthe

AccessoriessubmenuoftheStartmenu.



Bydefault,theIndexedlocations(meaningtheplacesWindows

tracksandincludesinyoursearchresults)includeyourpersonal

folder,email,andStartmenu.Youcan,however,includeother

foldersintheindex,forinclusionintheStartmenusearch.For

example,bydefault,filesandfoldersstoredinotherlocations

thantheonesdetailedpreviously(thatis,C:\VacationPhotos\)

won'tappearinthesearches.However,youcanaddany

locationtotheindex.

Here'showtoaddfolderstothesearchindex:

1. OpentheStartmenu.

2. ClickControlPanel.

3. Double-clickontheIndexingOptionsicon.

4. ClickModify,asshowninFigure6.26.

theTaskbarMenu

YoumighthavebeenfortunateenoughtodiscovertheShow

DesktopshortcutinWindowsXP.Forthosewhoweren't,using

thisshortcutwillsaveagreatdealofclicks(andessentially

time)ontheMinimizebuttontorevealthedesktop.Thisis

especiallytrueforthosewhomultitaskandhavemanywindows

andprogramsopenatonce.

Tip

IftheQuickLaunchtoolbarismissing,youcan

enableitbyright-clickingontheTaskbar,selecting

Toolbars,andclickingQuickLaunch.



Forexample,clickingtheMinimizebuttonforseveralwindows

and/orprogramstogettothedesktopcantakeanextrafive

seconds.Supposeyoudothissixtimesaday;youwaste30

secondsaday,andoverthreehourseachyear!UsingtheShow

Desktopshortcuttakesyoudirectlytothedesktopanddoesn't

wasteanytime.Therearetwowaystoaccessthisshortcut:

ClickontheShowDesktopicon,asshowninFigure6.28,in

theQuickLaunchtoolbar.
