PreviewingtheFinishedSong

Let'stakeasneakpreviewofthefinishedsong,sothatyou'll

haveanideawhatyou'regoingtobuild.I'vecalledthissong

SpaceBass,becausetheinspirationcamefromthecombinationof

severalstrongbassloopswithaspaceykeyboardpart.Thisis

thesortofthingIwouldscorefortheintromusictoacool

podcastshow.

1. ChooseFile>Opentoopenanexistingsongfile.

2. SelectGarageBand3Lessons>Lesson_04>4-4SpaceBass

final.

3. Double-click4-4SpaceBassfinaltoopenthesong.

ThesongopensintheGarageBandwindow.

4. PresstheHomekeytomovetheplayheadtothebeginning

ofthesong.

Beforeyouplaythesong,it'sagoodideatoturnoffthe

metronomeifitison.

You'vesuccessfullyworkedwiththemetronometurnedon

whilerecordingandhaveprobablynoticedthatitisstillon

duringplayback.Thatmightgetalittleannoyingaftera

while.Youhavetwochoicestoturnoffthemetronome

duringplayback.YoucouldgobacktotheGeneral

Preferenceswindowandchangethemetronomesettingsto

"Duringrecording"only.OryoucangototheControlmenu

andtoggleoffthemetronome.Theshortcuttotogglethe

metronomeonandoffisCmd-U.

5. ChooseControl>Metronome,orpressCmd-U,toturnoff

themetronomeifitisturnedon.

6. Playtheproject.

PreparingtheProject

Thenextseriesofexerciseswillwalkyouthroughthestepsof

buildingasongusingSoftwareInstruments.Mostofthesong

willbearrangedusingprere-cordedAppleLoopsthatare

SoftwareInstruments.You'llalsoaddarecordingofyourown

usingtheMusicalTypingfeature.Oncethepartsareinplace,

youwillapplysomeadvancedarrangingtechniquestoedit,

transpose,andfinishthepiece.

First,youneedtoopenthestartingversionofthesong.This

versioncontainsthreebassloopsthatwillactasthefoundation

totheentiresong.

1. Opentheproject4-1SpaceBassstartfromtheLesson_04

folder.

2. ChooseFile>SaveAsandsavetheprojectasSpaceBass

intoyourMyGarageBandProjectsfolder.

3. Playtheprojecttohearthecombinedbassloops.

Soundsinteresting.Notmuchofasongyet,butthesebass

partsinspiredtheentirepiece.There'sjustonethingtotake

careofbeforemovingonwithbuildingthesong.The

metronome!Assoonasyouopenedanothersong,the

metronomewasrightbackon,clickingawayduring

playback.Ratherthanturnitoffeverytimeyouopena

project,it'seasiertojustchangethepreferences.The

metronomemaynotbeplayingonyoursystemdepending

onyourmostrecentmetronomesettings.

4. ChooseGarageBand>Preferences.

TheGeneralPreferenceswindowopens.



5. Select"Duringrecording"fromtheMetronomecontrols.



6. ClosetheGeneralPreferenceswindow.



UnderstandingMelodyandRhythm

What'sthedifferencebetweenmelodyandrhythm?

Melodyistheplot,orstory,ofasong.It'sthememorablepart

thatyouhumtoyourselfwhenyouthinkofthesong,andit's

thepartotherpeoplewillrememberaswell.Ifyouthinkofthe

themesongtoyourfavoritemovie,youarethinkingofthe

melody.Melodyisusuallyplayedbytheleadinstrument,orlead

vocal,justastheleadstorylineofamovieisplayedbythelead

characters.

Inamelody-drivensong,youwritethemelodyfirst,thenadd

othertracksthatworkwellwiththemelody.Songswithlyrics

usuallyusethevocalsasthemelodyline.Mostoftoday's

popularmusicismelody-driven.

Thesongs"AlaskaSunrise"and"APerfectDay,"whichyou

workedonpreviously,weremelody-based.Iwroteandrecorded

thepianomelodyfirst,thenaddedtheotherinstrumentparts.

Rhythmisthepulseorheartbeatofthesong.Rhythmcanbe

playedbyoneinstrumentormanydifferentinstruments.

Rhythmisfeltasmuchasitisheard,anditdictatesthepacing

ofthedifferentinstrumentparts.Rhythmisusuallysetbythe

drumsandfollowedbytheotherrhythminstruments,suchas

bass,rhythmguitar,andkeyboards.Therhythmofasongmay

befasterorslowerdependingonthesong'stempo.Aslow

temposongmightbeaballadwithaslowandeasyrhythm.A

fasttemposongmightbearocksongwithadrivingbeat.

Inarhythm-drivensong,youcreatethebeats,percussion,or

rhythmpartsfirst,thenaddotherinstrumentpartsthatfitwell

withtherhythm.Rhythm-drivensongsareoftenusedtoscore

movietrailers(previews),andfast-pacedpromosor

commercials.Rapmusicisoftenrhythm-based,butitdepends



onthesong.

ThesongSpaceBass,whichyouarebuildingforthislesson,is

rhythm-driven.Forthispiece,Ibuilttherhythmtracksfirst,

andthencameupwithamelodytofit.



BuildingRhythmTracks

WiththeSpaceBasssong,itwillbemucheasiertoaddthe

melodyifwealreadyhavetherhythmtracksinplace.

Rhythmtrackscanconsistofabassline,asteadyrhythm

guitar,ordrumswhateverthesongusestoconveytherhythm.

Forthissong,thebassanddrumswillcarrytherhythm.

Insteadofrecordingthebassanddrumparts,you'llusesome

prerecordedAppleLoops.



ArrangingLoopsintheTimeline

Placingandaddingdifferentinstrumentalpartstobuildasong

isalsoreferredtoasarrangingasong.Thebassloopsforthis

projectarealreadyintheTime-line.Thetricknowistoarrange

theminawaythatcreatesaninterestingrhythmpatternfor

thesong.Usingthesamelooporloopsovermightstartoff

soundingcool,buteventuallyitbecomesmonotonousand

soundsveryrepetitive.Yourgoalinthissectionistospreadthe

loopsaroundabitintheTimelinetogiveeachoneachanceto

beheard,andcreatenaturalchangesinthesong'soverall

rhythmpattern.

Let'sstartbyspreadingthemoutoneafteranotherinthe

Timeline.

1. DragtheSynthbassSequence01regiononthemiddleSyn

Basstracktotherightsothatitstartsonthe5thmeasure.

2. DragtheSynthbassregiononthelowesttracktothe9th

measure.



Noweachbassparttakesaturnoneatatime.

3. Playtheprojecttohearthebassparts.

Whatdoyouthink?Eachonebyitselfisinteresting,but

theyseemtogoonabitlong.Also,thereisnofeelofa

songorrhythmtrackcomingfromthisparticular

arrangement.Often,combiningpartswillnotonlyprovide

muchneededchange,butalsocreateadifferentfeel

altogether.

4. DragtheSynthbassSequence01regioninthemiddletrack

totheleftuntilitstartsatthe3rdmeasure.



5. DragtheSynthbassregiononthelowesttracktothe6th

measuresoitoverlapsthebasspartinthemiddletrack.



6. Playthenewbassarrangementtohearhowitsounds.

Muchmoreinteresting,plusyoucanusethechanges

betweenpartstodrivechangesintheothermusicalparts

you'lladdlater.

7. PressCmd-Stosaveyourprogress.



DuplicatingRegionsintheTimeline

Thebasspartsareworking,they'rejustalittleshort.Since

mostsongsarerepetitive,itwouldbegreatifyoucouldjust

duplicatetheentiresectionsoitwillrepeat.



ToduplicateselectedregionsintheTimeline,youcansimply

holdtheOptionkeywhiledraggingtheregions.Thismethodis

alsoreferredtoasOption-draggingtoduplicateWhenusingthis

method,itisveryimportanttoclicktheselectedregionsfirst

beforeyoupresstheOptionkey.

1. ChooseEdit>SelectAll,orpressCmd-A,toselectallofthe

regionsintheTimeline.

2. PressandholdOption,clickanyoftheselectedregions,and

dragtowardtheright.

3. Releasetheduplicateregionssothattheupperregion

beginsatthe7thmeasure.

butOption-draggingisthemostefficienttechniqueinthis

AuditioningSoftwareInstrumentDrumLoops

Manysongsstartwiththedrumpartstobuildthesong's

rhythmtracks,thenaddbassandotherinstruments.Let'slook

forafewdrumpartsthatworkwellwiththerhythmyou've

alreadyestablishedinthebasstracks.
