Normally,installingtheJDSiseasyusingtheCDsincludedwith

youroriginalJDSinstallationmedia.Weassumethatyouhave

themediaandplantousethismethod.Essentially,youcanuse

thesamestepstoupgradeJDStoalaterversionfromCD-ROM

imagesthatyoucandownloadorpurchasefromSun.

IfyouplanoninstallingJDSfromaserversetupbyyour

organization,thematerialinthisappendixprobablydoesnot

pertaintoyou.

TheJavaDesktopSystemcomeswithdocumentationthatcan

helpyouinstallthesystem.Thisinformationisonthe

DocumentationCDthataccompaniesyourJDSMedia.Atthe

timeofthiswriting,youcanfindtheinstallationguideunder

F.1SystemRequirements

TosuccessfullyinstallJDS,youarerequiredtohaveapersonal

computer(PC)thatmeetscertainmodesthardwareresources.

SunMicrosystemsprovidesbothaminimumsupported

configurationandarecommendedone.Theminimumsupported

configurationrequiresanIntelPentiumII266MHzcompatible

processor,a4GBharddisk,128MBofRAM,andacolor

monitorwithatleastan800600screenresolution.

Ideally,SunrecommendsaPentiumIIIcompatibleprocessor,

600MHzorfaster,atleast4GBofharddiskspace,atleast256

MBofRAM,and1024768screenresolutionorbetter.However,

wehavefoundthesystemrunsbestwithaPentiumIV

processorand512MBofmemory.Thesystemcanalsoachieve

excellentperformancewithaDRImonitorandVideocardifthe

manufacturerprovidesaconfigurationutilityfortheDRIdriver.

YourPCshouldbootfromaninstallationCD.Intelsystemshave

differentwaysofbootingfromtheCD-orDVD-ROM.For

example,someLaptopsallowyoutobootfromtheCD-ROM

onlyifyoupressaspecificbutton.Sometimesitisnotenough

torebootasystemwiththeCD-ROMinstalled;youmayhaveto

inserttheCD-ROM,powerdownthesystem,andpoweritup

again.

IfyoutryinsertingtheCD-ROMandpoweringupthesystem,

butitinsistsonbootingfromtheharddiskasusual,youmay

needtoentertheBIOSutilityandselecttheorderinwhichyour

CD-ROMboots.Theexactprocedurevariesfromsystemto

system;oneexampleofaBIOSdisplayisshowninFigureF-1.

ThescreenintheBIOSutilityshowstheorderofbooting.In

thissituation,thefirstbootdevicelistedistheharddrive(HDD0).

YouneedtochangethisordersothattheCD-ROMbecomesthe

firstbootdevice.Intheexamplescreen,youselecttheFirst

BootDevicebyusingthearrowkeysonyourkeyboard.You

thenpresstheEnterkeyandanotherscreenappearsoffering

youdifferentdeviceoptions,suchastheharddrive,CD-ROMor

Floppy.IfyouchoosetheCD-ROM,youmayormaynothaveto

resettheremainingdevices,dependingonthetypeofcomputer

youhave.

noticethedifferenceinthetypeofpagedisplayed.Inthis

Ontherighthandsideofthescreen,youcanseethe

instructionsforselectingthedeviceyouwanttobegintheboot

process.Ifthesystemdoesn'tfindaCD-ROMinthedrivetray,

itwillseekasystemdiskinthenextdevice,andsoon.

Werecommendthatyoulookatyourcomputer'sdocumentation

todeterminehowtobootfromtheCD-ROM.Unfortunately,so

manydifferentsystemsexistthatmethodsvarynotonlyfrom

manufacturertomanufacturerbutfrommodeltomodel.Ifyou

like,ofcourse,youcangobackintheBIOSandrestorethe

previousorderofbootingonceyouhavesuccessfullyinstalled

JDSanddon'tanticipatetheneedtoreinstallit.

Youneedtohavecertaininformationreadybeforeyoubegin

Manypeopleliketohavetwooperatingsystemstobootfrom.

Thisisnotlikethesimultaneoususeofmultipleoperating

systemsdescribedinChapter9.Dualbootingallowsyouto

chooseyouroperatingsystemwhenyouboot,butyoucan't

switchbackandforthbetweenthemduringsystemoperation;

youhavetoreboottochangeoperatingsystems.Despitethe

rigidityofthispractice,itisveryconvenientforpeoplewith

amplediskspacewhoneedtorunWindows,forexample,for

someactivitiesandJDSforothers.

ToinstallLinuxonamachinewithanotheroperatingsystemin

place,youneedadual-bootenvironmentandapproximately5

GBoffreediskspace.

Typically,Windowsinstallationsuseanentireharddisk,leaving

nospaceforotheroperatingsystems.Sun'sJDSInstallation

ProgramcancreateapartitionallowingyoutoinstalltheLinux

operatingsystem,evenifthediskisalreadytakenupbya

Windowsformattedpartition.



WhatArePartitions?

Apartitionisaphysicalsectionofadrivethatcanbetreatedasaseparatedisk.

Eachpartitioncontainsitsownfilesystem.Somepartitionscanbesubdivided

furtherintopartitions,abitofcomplexitythatisneededtoovercomerestrictions

intheIntelx86chiparchitecture.

Threetypesofpartitionsexist:primary,extended,andlogical.Fourprimary

partitionscanexistonasingledrive.Generally,oneprimarypartitionisusedfor

thefilesthatbootthesystemandanotherforthefilesthattheoperatingsystem

anditsusersaccesswhenitisrunning,butthereisgreatflexibilityinthechoice

ofwhattopartition.

Anextendedpartitiontakesuptheslotofaprimarypartitionbutcanbebroken

downintologicalpartitions,whichallowsadrivetohavemorethanfourlogical

divisions.YoucanformateachlogicalpartitiontosupportLinuxoranother

operatingsystem.



TheBootProcess

Whenacomputerpowersup,theCPUrunsstartupcodefromasystem'sreadonlyBIOS(BasicInputOutputSystem).ThisproceduresiscalledaPOST

(Power-onSelfTest).DuringPOST,thesystemsetsupthehardwareforuse.

Priortostartingtheoperatingsystem,thesystemloadsandrunsaprogram

storedonthefirstsectorofthefirstdrivecalledthemasterbootrecord(MBR).

JDSusesaprogramcalledGRUBtolookfortheprimarypartitionsandtosee

whichoneistaggedastheactivepartition.Theactivepartitionhasitsownboot

record,whichstartstheoperatingsystemlocatedonthatpartition.



Ifyouhavelessthan5GBavailable,considerinstallingan

additionaldriveorcarvethespaceoutofyourexistingdrive

usingafreeutilitysuchasFIPSoracommercialproductsuch

asPartitionMagic.(TheJDSutilitydoesnotworkwithNTFSformatteddrives.)

Repartitioningadriveinvolvessomerisk,sobesuretobackup

yourdatabeforerepartitioning.

BecauseWindowscannotresizeexistingpartitions,theJDS

InstallationProgramchecksyourharddisktofindouthowit's

laidoutandproposesanappropriatepartitionsetuptopermit

JDStorun.



IfyourexistingWindowstakesuptheentirediskwithanNTFSfile

system,theJDSinstallationprogramdoesnotenableyoutoresize

yourpartition,butproposesinsteadreplacingyourexistingpartition.In

ordertokeepyourWindowspartitionandpermitdualbooting,use

third-partypartitionapplicationssuchasPartitionMagictoresizeyour

partitionsandcreatespecialpartitionsforJDS.

Asdescribedearlier,installingJDSinvolvesinsertingthefirst

CD-ROMfromtheJDSdistributionintoyourCD-ROMdriveand

poweringupthecomputeragainsoitbootsfromthisCD-ROM.

Atthatpoint,theinstallationproceduredisplaysalistof

options:

Bootfromharddisk

Installation

InstallationACPIDisabled

InstallationSafeSettings

ManualInstallation

RescueSystem

MemoryTest

ThefirstoptionisprovidedincaseyouleftyourinstallationCD

inyourCD-ROMdrivebymistakebutdon'twanttostartan

installation.Ifso,choosethefirstoption.Otherwise,choosethe

installationoptionthatpertainstoyou,andpresstheEnterkey.

TheinstallationprogramthendisplaysSun'sBinaryCode

LicenseAgreement.Ifyouaccepttheagreement,clickon

Acceptandtheinstallationwillcontinue.Ifyoudonotaccept

theagreement,theinstallationwillnotcontinueandyouwill

havetoaborttheinstallation.ForLinuxuserswhohave

installedfreedistributions,acceptingtheBinaryCodeLicense



Agreementmaybeanewtwistforyou.JDScontains

proprietarycomponentsthatrequiretheagreement.Installation

isnotanirreversibledecision,however.Ifyoudecidelaterthat

youdonotwanttocontinueusingJDSbecauseofthelicenseor

foranyotherreason,youcanwipethedrivecleanandchange

toafreeLinuxdistribution.

Now,youshouldbeintheinstallationprogram.Youwillnotice

severalsectionsofdialogboxes.Followtheprocedureasthey

appear.
