3.5.1.AddingExternalMailAccounts

TheonlyrequirementforaddinganoutsideaccounttoYahoo!

MailisthatitmustbeapubliclyavailablePostOffice

Protocol(POP)account.Chancesareverygoodthatallofyour

emailaccountsusethePOPv3standard.

Ifyou'reusinganInternetMessageAccessProtocol(IMAP)

emailaccount,youwon'tbeabletocheckthataccountwith

Yahoo!Mail.Also,Yahoo!MaildoesnotsupportencryptedSSL

connectionsforPOPaccounts,soifyourmailserverrequiresan

SSLconnection,youwon'tbeabletocheckthataccountwith

Yahoo!Maileither.



Yahoo!Mailtrafficisnotencryptedandcanbesubjectto

eavesdropping.Ifyourmailfromexternalaccountsisextremely

sensitive,youmightnotwanttoviewitviaYahoo!Mail.



Toaddanaccount,logintoYahoo!MailandclickMailOptions

fromtheupper-rightsideofthepage.ClickMailAccountsto

seeasummaryofyouraccountsandthenclicktheAddbutton

tostartaddinganexternalaccount.

Fromhere,youjustneedtochooseanametorepresentthe

account,suchasWorkorSchool,andthenenterthemail

serverinformationthattellsYahoo!Mailhowtoaccessthat

externalaccount.Themailserveraddresswilldependonthe

companythatprovidesyouremailservice,andyou'llneedto

contactthemifyoudon'tknowthemailserveraddress.You'll

alsoneedtoincludethesameusernameandpasswordyouuse

tocheckthatparticularemailaccount.ThisgivesYahoo!Mail

enoughinformationtochecktheaccount.



You'llneedtochooseacolortorepresentemailfromeachexternal

account.Thiswillhelpyouseeataglancetheaccounteachemailis

fromasyouviewyourYahoo!Mailinbox.

You'llneedtoclickonanyexternalmailserveryou'dliketo

check,becauseYahoo!Mailwillnotautomaticallycheckthem.

Thismeansthatifyou'renotreadytodealwithacrisisatwork

whileyou'reonacruiseship,youcansimplyavoidclickingthe

link.Afteryou'veclickedthelink,Yahoo!willcontactyourmail

serveranddownloadanynewemail.Theemailswillappearin

yourinbox,andthey'llbehighlightedwiththecolorthat

3.5.2.EditingExternalMailAccounts

Youcanaccessyourexternalmailaccountssettingsatanytime

byclickingMailAccountsfromtheMailOptionspage.Tochange

thesettings,highlightanaccountandclicktheEditbutton.You



canmodifythesettingsyouenteredwhenyousetupthe

account:mailserver,name,password,andaccountcolor.And

YoucanchooseanexistingYahoo!Mailfolderfromthe

menutohaveallexternalemailsenttoafolderotherthan

yourInbox.Usethisoptionifyouwanttokeepexternal

OverrideDefaultPOPPort

Ifyourmailserverusesaportotherthan110forPOP

delivery,youcansetthealternateporthere.



LeaveMailonPOPServer

Checkthisoptiontoleaveacopyoftheemailonyourmail

server.Withthisoptionchecked,Yahoo!willnotdelete

emailfromyourmailserver,soyoucanretrieveitagain

laterwithyourstandardemailclient.Thisoptionisenabled

3.5.3.CheckingMailonYourPhone

Anotherbenefitofcheckingyourexternalmailaccountswith

canuseanyInternet-enabledcellphonetoreadyourmail.

Onewaytobringallofyouremailtogetheristoaddyour

withyouremailclient,therearealsowaystorouteyourYahoo!

Mailthere.

ThemostdirectrouteisbyupgradingyourYahoo!Mailaccount

toYahoo!MailPlus.Foranannualfeeof$20(atthetimeofthis

writing),Yahoo!MailPlusaddsvariousfeaturestoyouraccount,

includingdirectPOPAccess.Withtheupgrade,you'llbeableto

retrieveyourYahoo!Mailinthesamewaythatyougetmail

fromyourotheraccounts.



AnotherrouteisviaYPOPs!,opensourcesoftwarethatwasput

togetherbyahandfulofdevelopersworkingintheirsparetime

tosolvethisveryproblem.YPOPs!turnsyourmachineintoa

minimailserverandatthesametimedissectstheYahoo!Mail

webinterface,translatingwebtextintostandardemail.



3.6.1.InstallingYPOPs!

YPOPs!isavailableforjustabouteveryplatform,including

Windows,Mac,andLinux.Tograbacopy,browseto

http://yahoopops.sourceforge.net,clicktheDownloadslink

towardthetopofthepage,andfindtheversionforyour

operatingsystem.

Ifyou'reonaWindowsmachine,youcansimplyclickthe

downloadfileandinstalltheprogram.Theinstallationprogram

willaskifyouwantYPOPs!tostartwhenWindowsstarts,and

youcanclickNohere.(Youcaneasilychangethissettingonce

theprogramisinstalled.)Onceyou'refinished,theprogramwill

startandanewiconwillappearinyoursystemtray,asshown

inFigure3-9.
