MLSeriesThreecardtypescomprisethe"flagship"

EthernetinterfacesfortheONS15454,theMLSeries.The

MLSeriescanbethoughtofasLayer2/Layer3switches

embeddedintotheSynchronousOpticalNetwork

(SONET)/SynchronousDigitalHierarchy(SDH)network.

Thesecardssupportarichsetoffeaturesandinterface

types.

Typically,eachseries(orfamily)ofONS15454Ethernetcardsis

usedinaSONET/SDHnetwork.Forexample,ML-Seriescards

areusedtointeroperatewithotherML-Seriescardswithina

SONET/SDHring.However,someEthernetcardsfromdifferent

seriescaninterconnectwitheachotherusingcircuitsconfigured

betweentheirrespectivePacketoverSONET/SDH(POS)

interfaces.Thelimitationofmixingthesetypestointeroperate

inanetworkisthattheyarelimitedtoframe-forwarding(Layer

1)functionalityonly.So,forexample,ifacircuitisbuilt

betweenthePOSinterfaceofanML-SeriescardandthePOS

interfaceofaG-Seriescard,theswitchfeaturesoftheMLSeriescard(suchasVLANs)arenotsupported.Toachieve

EthernetcardPOSinteroperabilitybetweencardsofdissimilar

series,thePOSencapsulationtype(LEX,forexample),the

cyclicredundancycheck(CRC)size,andtheframingmode

(HDLC,forexample)mustmatchatthePOSendpoints.

ItispossibletointeroperatecardsintheMLSeries,GSeries,

andCESeries.However,theE-SeriescardsuseproprietaryESeriesencapsulationanddonotsupportPOSinteroperability

withanyoftheotherEthernetcardseries.

CiscoONS15454E-SeriesEthernetinterfacecardsintegratea

Layer2switchintotheSONET/SDHplatform,enabling

multipointEthernetservicedeliverywithintheopticaltransport

network.Additionally,throughtheuseoftheESeries"portmapped"mode,point-to-pointEthernetservicescanbe

provisioned.

ThetwocardsincludedintheESeries,theE100T-12/E100T-G

andtheE1000-2/E1000-2-Gcards,weretheinitialEthernet

interfacecardsintroducedwiththeONS15454platform.(The

E100T-GandE1000-2-Garelaterversions,withtheadditional

capabilityoffunctioningwithXC10G-equippedsystems.)

Althoughthesecardsarebasedonsolidtechnologies,thelater

generationsofEthernetinterfacesprovidecapabilitiesthatthe

E-Seriescardsdonot.Forexample,theCESeriesandGSeries

provideformoreefficientwaysofdeliveringpoint-to-point

services,whiletheML-Seriescardsdeliveramuchricher

featuresetformultipointservicesthantheE-Seriescards.For

thisreason,E-Seriescardsaremostoftenfoundinexisting

networksandaretypicallynotchosenfornewnetworkbuilds.

Provisioning

E-SeriesEthernetcircuitscanbeusedtolinkE-Seriescardsin

multipleONS15454nodesinpoint-to-point(privateline),huband-spoke,orsharedpacketring(SPR)configurations.Ifa

connectionisneededbetweenonlytwonodes,apoint-to-point

connectionistypicallyused.Ifconnectivityisneededamong

morethantwosites,thehub-and-spokeorSPRtopologycanbe

used.Figure7-1showsanexampleofanetworkthatusesthe

sharedpacketringconfiguration.TheringwillpassthroughESeriescardsinthefournodes(A,B,C,andD)onanOC-12

unidirectionalpath-switchedring(UPSR).InUPSRshared

packetringconfigurations,Layer1SONETprotectionisnot

used(SpanningTreeProtocol[STP]only).

thestepsinsettingupaSPR:

Step1. VerifythattheEthernetcardsthatwillbeintheSPR

areprovisionedforMulticardEtherSwitchmode.

Step2. ProvisiontheE-SeriesEthernetports.Thiscaninclude

assigningportnames,performingautonegotiationand

duplex,enablingtheports,assigningportqueuing

priorities,andenablingSTP.

Step3. ProvisiontheE-Seriesportsformembershipinoneor

moreVLANs.

Step4. CreatetheSPREthernetcircuit.Thiscircuitcanbean

STS-1,STS-3c,orSTS-6c.Forthecircuitsourceand

destination,selectEthergroupastheslotforthe



endpointnodes.Youcanassignanexistingvirtual

local-areanetwork(VLAN)tothecircuitorcreatea

newVLAN.

Step5. ManuallyroutetheSPRcircuitthrougheverynodein

thering.

CiscoONS15454G-Series(calledG1K-4)Ethernetinterface

cardsenabletheprovisioningofuptofourpoint-to-pointLayer

1mappedEthernetservices,whicharealsoknownasEthernet

privateline(EPL)services.Eachofthecard'sfourportscanbe

independentlyequippedwithmodularGigabitinterface

converters(GBICs),asneeded,forservicerequirements.

"Privateline"isgoodterminologyforthistypeofservice

becausetheseconnectionsareprovisionedandactmuchlike

traditionalprivatelineservices,suchasaDS3provisionedover

aSONETnetwork.Theonlymajordifferencesarethatthe

Ethernetframesaretransportednativelyinsteadofbeing

packagedintoaDS1orDS3frame,andthebandwidthofthe

linkisvariablewithincertainSTS-1orSTS-Nccircuitsizes

(whereNcanbe1,3,6,9,12,24,or48).RecallthatanSTS24ccircuitisrequiredtoprovidefullline-rateGigEconnectivity

betweenthetwocircuitendpointsandthatthemaximum

bandwidththatcanbeusedacrossthefourportsoftheGSeriescardsisequalto48STS-1s.

(STS-12corlower)circuit.Forthistypeofconfiguration,there

isnorestrictiononcircuitterminations.InFigure7-2(b),a

singleline-rate(STS-24c)circuitisterminatedonport1,and

theothercircuitsterminatedonthecardaresubratecircuits.In

thiscase,ahardwarerestrictionlimitsthetotalbandwidth

provisionedacrossthecombinationoftheotherthreeportstoa

maximumof12STS-1s.Onepossibilityisshowninthe

example:AnSTS-6ccircuitandtwoSTS-3ccircuitsareusedin

combinationwiththesingleSTS-24ccircuit.Finally,Figure72(c)showsanexampleoftwoline-rateSTS-24ccircuits

terminatedonports1and2oftheG-Seriescard.Inthiscase,

theremainingtwoports(ports3and4intheexample)cannot

beusedbecausethetwoline-ratecircuitshavereachedthe

STS-48totalcardbandwidthlimit.

CandD(anSTS-9candanSTS-3c,respectively).This

configurationisknownasa"hub-and-spoke"application;Node

Aisthehub,withspokecircuitsextendingtoeachoftheother

sites.

Inthisexample,therouterlocatedatNodeAisthehubrouter

intheenduser'sdatanetwork.Theinterfacesoftherouterat

theNodeAlocationlabeledGi0(GigE0),Gi1,andGi2are



equippedwithGBICsorSmallFormFactorPluggables(SFPs)of

thesamewavelengthastheGBICsinstalledinports1,2,and3

oftheG-SeriescardinstalledinNodeA.Afiberpair,either

multimode(for1000Base-SXGBICs/SFPs)orsingle-mode(for

1000Base-LXor1000Base-ZXGBICs/SFPs)connectseachGSeriescardporttothecorrespondingrouterport.Similarly,the

remoteofficerouterslocatedatSitesB,C,andDwillhave

wavelength-matchedinterfacesconnectedtoport1oftheir

respectiveG-Seriescards.

Inadditiontothe1000Base-SX,1000Base-LX,and1000BaseZXGBICs,theG-SeriesEthernetcardssupportavarietyof

coarsewavelength-divisionmultiplexing(CWDM)anddense

wavelength-divisionmultiplexing(DWDM)GBICs.

TheG-SeriescardsupportsanyLayer3protocolthatcanbe

encapsulatedandtransportedoverGigE,suchasInternet

Protocol(IP)orInternetPacketExchange(IPX).

Card

TheG-Seriescardsprovideseveralimportantfeaturestoensure

smoothoperationoftheend-useroverlayLayer2/Layer3

network.Amongthesefeaturesarethesupportofstandardflow

controlandframebuffering,linkaggregation,andend-to-end

Ethernetlinkintegrity.Eachofthesefeaturesisdiscussed
