anEthernetnetworkcableorAirPortwirelessnetwork.

ChooseWindowsifthere'saWindows-onlyprinterout

thereonyourofficenetwork.Andsoon.

Afteramoment,thenamesofanyprintersthatareturned

onandconnectedappearintheprinterlist.Formost



people,thatmeansonlyoneprinter—butone'senough.

5. Clickthenameoftheprinteryouwanttouse.

Asanoptionalstep,youcanopenthePrintUsingpop-up

menuatthebottomofthedialogbox.Choose"Selecta

drivertouse,"andthen,inthelistthatappears,choose

yourparticularprinter'smodelname,ifyoucanfindit.

That'showyourMacknowswhatprintingfeaturestooffer

youwhenthetimecomes:double-sided,legalsize,second

papertray,andsoon.

6. ClickAdd.

Afteramoment,youreturntothemainPrinterBrowser

window(Figure9-1,top),whereyourprinternowappears.

You'rereadytoprint.



9.1.2.ThePrinterList

Ifyou'reluckyenoughtoownseveralprinters,repeatthesteps

aboveforeachone.Eventually,you'llhaveintroducedtheMac

toalltheprintersavailabletoit,soalltheirnamesshowupin

theprinterlist.

Chooseadefaultprinter.AsindicatedbytheDefault

Printerpop-upmenu,Leopardintends,conveniently

enough,tousewhicheverprinteryouusedforthelast

printoutforthenextone.Mostpeople,afterall,don't

switchprintersmuch.

Still,youcanchooseoneparticularprinterfromthispop-up

menutosetitasthedefaultprinter—theonethattheMac

usesunlessyouintervenebychoosingfromthePrinterpopupmenuinthePrintdialogbox(Figure9-1).

comeswiththenecessarysoftwareforhundredsupon

hundredsofprinters?Unlessyou'reinOprah'staxbracket,

youprobablydon'townthatmanyprinters—buttheir

driversaretakingupnearlyagigabyteofharddrivespace!

Tocleanouttheonesyoudon'tneed,openyourharddrive

Library Printersfolder.Throwawaythefoldersfor

printercompaniesthatdidn'tmakeyourprinter.

9.1.3.MakingthePrintout

Theexperienceofprintingdependsontheprinteryou'reusing

—laserprinter,inkjet,orwhatever.Ineverycase,however,all

theprintingoptionshidebehindtwocommands:File Page

Setup,whichyouneedtoadjustonlyoccasionally,andFile

Print,whichyougenerallyuseeverytimeyouprint.You'llfind

thesetwocommandsinalmosteveryMacintoshprogram.



9.1.3.1.PageSetup

ThePageSetupdialogboxletsyouspecifysomekey

characteristicsaboutthedocumentyou'regoingtoprint:

orientation,paperdimensions,andsoon;seeFigure9-2.

Theoptionsherevarybyprogramandprinter.ThePageSetup

optionsforanEpsoninkjet,forexample,differdramatically

fromthoseforalaserprinter.Onlyyourprinter'susermanual

cantellyouexactlywhatthesechoicesdo.

9.1.3.2.ThePrintCommand

Althoughyoucangrowtoaripeoldagewithouteverseeingthe

PageSetupdialogbox,youcan'tmissthePrintdialogbox.It

appears,likeitornot,wheneveryouchooseFile Printinone

ofyourprograms.

Onceagain,theoptionsyouencounterdependontheprinter

you'reusing.Theyalsodependonwhetherornotyouexpand

thedialogboxbyclickingthe button;doingsorevealsalotof

usefuloptions,includingahandypreview;seeFigure9-3.

Note:TheexactlayoutofthisexpandedPrintdialogboxdiffers

byprogram.

Ifyouexpandthebox,here'swhatyoumayfind:

Printer.Ifyouhavemorethanoneprinterconnectedto

yourMac,youcanindicatewhichyouwanttousefora

particularprintoutbychoosingitsnamefromthispop-up



menu.

Presets.Here'sawaytopreserveyourfavoriteprint

settings:Onceyou'veproceededthroughthisdialogbox,

specifyingthenumberofcopies,whichprintertraysyou

wantthepapertakenfrom,andsoon,youcanchooseSave

Asfromthepop-upmenu,andthenassignyoursettingsset



aname(like"Borderless,2copies").Thereafter,you'llbe

abletorecreatethatelaboratesuiteofsettingssimplyby

choosingitsnamefromthispop-upmenu.

Copies.Typethenumberofcopiesyouwantprinted.The

Collatedcheckboxcontrolstheprintingorderforthevarious

pages.Forexample,ifyouprinttwocopiesofathree-page

document,theMacgenerallyprintsthepagesinthisorder:

1,2,3,1,2,3.IfyouturnoffCollated,ontheotherhand,

itprintsinthisorder:1,1,2,2,3,3.

Pages.Youdon'thavetoprintanentiredocument—you

canprint,say,onlypages2through15.

Tip:Youdon'thavetotypenumbersintoboththeFrom

andToboxes.Ifyouleavethefirstboxblank,theMac

assumesthatyoumean"frompage1."Ifyouleavethe

secondboxblank,theMacunderstandsyoumean"tothe

end."Toprintonlythefirstthreepages,inotherwords,

leavethefirstboxblank,andtype3intothesecondbox.

(Thesepagenumbersrefertothephysicalpagesyou're

printing,nottoanyfancynumberingyou'vesetupinyour

wordprocessor.AsfarasthePrintdialogboxisconcerned,

thefirstprintedpageispage1,evenifyou'vetoldyour

wordprocessortolabelitpage455.)

PaperSize,Orientation.Theseoptionsalsoappearinthe

PageSetupbox,butit'sconvenienttohavethemduplicated

rightinthePrintdialogbox.

PDF.APDFfile,ofcourse,isanAdobeAcrobatdocument—

afilethatanyMac,Windows,Linux,orUnixusercanview,

read,andprintusingeitherPrevieworthefreeAcrobat

Reader(includedwitheveryPC).

YoucaneasilysaveanydocumentasaPDFfileinsteadof

printingit—atrulybeautifulfeaturethatsavespaper,ink,



andtime.Thedocumentremainsonyourharddrive,and

thetextinsideisevensearchableusingSpotlight.

Butthat'sjustthebeginning.Applehasaddedalonglistof

additionalPDFoptions(likepassword-protectedPDFs,

emailedones,andsoon).Itfacedadesignquandary:How

coulditofferanewlistofPDF-relatedoptionswithout

junkingupthePrintdialogbox?

Itssolutionwasastrangelittleitemcalledapop-upbutton,

showninFigure9-3,top.Useitlikeapop-upmenu.The

commandyou'llusemostoftenisprobablySaveasPDF,

whichturnstheprintoutintoaPDFfileinsteadofsendingit

totheprinter.FordetailsontheotherPDF-relatedoptions

here,seepage237.

Preview.Thisbutton,presentonlyinthecollapsedversion

ofthePrintdialogbox(Figure9-3,top),providesaprintpreviewfunctiontoalmosteveryMacOSXprogramon

earth,which,inthecourseofyourlife,couldsavehuge

swathsoftheBrazilianrainforestandaswimmingpool's

worthofinkinwastedprintouts.

Technically,thePreviewbuttonsendsyourprintoutto

Preview.Previewletsyouzoominorzoomout,rotate,or

otherwiseprocessyourpreview.Whenyou'resatisfiedwith

howitlooks,youcanprintit(File Print),cancelit(File

Close),orturnitintoaPDFfile(File SaveasPDF).

Supplies.Thisfeaturewillstrikeyoueitherasblissfully

convenientordisgustinglymercenary:abuttonthattakes

youdirectlytoaWebpagewhereyoucanbuynew

cartridgesforyourspecificprintermodel.

Ifyouexaminetheunnamedpop-upmenujustbelowthe

Presetspop-upmenu,youfinddozensofadditionaloptions.

Theydependonyourprintermodelandtheprogramyou're

usingatthemoment,butherearesometypicalchoices:

Layout.AsdescribedinFigure9-3,youcansavepaper



andinkortonercartridgesbyprintingseveralminiature

"pages"onasinglesheetofpaper.

PaperHandling.Youcanopttoprintoutyourpagesin

reverseordersothattheystackcorrectly,oryoucan

printjustoddorevenpagessothatyoucanrunthem

throughagainfordouble-sidedprinting.

CoverPage.Yes,thatthrowawayinfopagehasmade

itswayfromthefaxworldintothehard-copyworld.

Scheduler.Thisoptionletsyouspecifywhenyouwant

yourdocumenttoprint.Ifyou'reafreelancer,sittingat

homewithaninkjetonyourdesk,youmightnot

immediatelygraspwhyanyonewouldn'twantthe

printoutsrightnow.Buttryprintinga400-pagecatalog

inabigofficewhereotherpeopleonthenetworkmight

conceivablyresentyoufortyingupthelaserprinterall

afternoon,andyou'llgettheidea.

ColorSync.Mostcolorprintersofferthispanel,where

youcanadjustthecolorsettings—toaddalittlemore

red,perhaps.Thisisalsowhereyouindicatewhose

color-matchingsystemyouwanttouse:Apple's

ColorSync,yourprintermanufacturer's,ornoneatall.

Then,belowthelightgraylineinthispop-upmenu,you'llfinda

fewoptionsthatareuniquetothechosenprinterorprogram.

SomeHPprinters,forexample,offerCoverPage,Finishing,and

otherchoices.Otherlikelyguestcommands:

Quality&Media(inkjetprintersonly).Here'swhereyou

specifytheprintqualityyouwant,thekindofpaperyou're

printingon,andsoon.(Thenameofthispanelvariesby

manufacturer.)

[ProgramName].Whicheverprogramyou'reusing—Mail,

Word,AppleWorks,oranythingelse—mayofferitsown

specialprintingoptionsonthisscreen.



9.1.4.Printing

Whenallofyoursettingslookgood,clickPrint(orpressEnter)

tosendyourprintouttotheprinter.

9.1.PrintersandPrinting

PrintinghasalwaysbeenoneoftheMac'sstrongsuits—and

you'reabouttofindoutwhy.



9.1.1.SettingUpaPrinter

OnebeautyofMacOSXisthatsettingupaprinterforthefirst

timeisincrediblyeasy.Thefirsttimeyouwanttoprint

something,followthisguide:

1. ConnecttheprintertotheMac,andthenturnthe

printeron.

InkjetprintersusuallyconnecttoyourUSBjack.Laser

printersgenerallyhookuptoyourEthernetconnector.

2. Openthedocumentyouwanttoprint.ChooseFile

Print.InthePrintdialogbox,chooseyourprinter's

namefromthePrinterpop-upmenu(oroneofits

submenus,ifany).

Cool!Wasn'tthateasy?VerynicehowtheMac

autodiscovers,autoconfigures,andautolistsalmostany

USB,FireWire,Bluetooth,orBonjour(Rendezvous)printer.
