Everydocument,program,folder,anddiskonyourMacis

representedbyanicon:acolorfullittlepicturethatyoucan

move,copy,ordouble-clicktoopen.InMacOSX,iconslook

morelikephotosthancartoons,andyoucanscalethemto

practicallyanysize.

Thischapterisallaboutmanipulatingthoseicons—thatis,your

files,folders,anddisks.It'sallaboutnamingthem,copying

them,deletingthem,labelingthem—andthen,maybemost

importantofall,findingthem,usingtheMac'sfamousSpotlight

instant-searchfeature.



3.1.RenamingIcons

AMacOSXicon'snamecanhaveupto255lettersandspaces.

Ifyou'reaccustomedtothe31-characteroreven8-character

limitsofoldercomputers,that'squitealuxuriousceiling.

AsaWindowsveteran,futhermore,youmaybedelightedto

discoverthatinMacOSX,youcannameyourfilesusing

letters,numbers,punctuation—infact,anysymbolexceptfor

thecolon(:),whichtheMacusesbehindthescenesforitsown

folder-hierarchydesignationpurposes.Andyoucan'tusea

periodtobeginafile'sname.

Torenameafile,clickitsnameoricon(tohighlightit)andthen

pressReturnorEnter.(Or,ifyouhavetimetokill,clickonceon

thename,waitamoment,andthenclickasecondtime.)

Inanycase,arectanglenowappearsaroundthename(Figure

3-1).Atthispoint,theexistingnameishighlighted;justbegin

typingtoreplaceit.Ifyoutypeaverylongname,therectangle

growsverticallytoaccommodatenewlinesoftext.

Tip:Ifyousimplywanttoaddletterstothebeginningorendof

thefile'sexistingname,presstheleftorrightarrowkey



immediatelyafterpressingReturnorEnter.Theinsertionpoint

jumpstothecorrespondingendofthefilename.

3.2.SelectingIcons

Tohighlightasingleiconinpreparationforprinting,opening,

duplicating,ordeleting,clicktheicononce.Boththeiconand

thenamedarkeninauniquelyLeopardishway.

Tip:Youcanchangethecoloroftheovalhighlightingthat

appearsaroundthenameofaselectedicon.Choose

SystemPreferences,clickAppearance,andusetheHighlight

Colorpop-upmenu.)

Thatmuchmayseemobvious.Butlotsofpeoplehavenoidea

howtomanipulatemorethanoneiconatatime—anessential

survivalskill.Thesetechniquesareessentiallythesameasin

Windows,exceptthatthekeysyouholddownaredifferent.



3.2.1.SelectingbyClicking

Tohighlightmultiplefilesinpreparationformovingorcopying,

useoneofthesetechniques:

Tohighlightseveraliconsbydragging.Youcandrag

diagonallytohighlightagroupofnearbyicons,asshownin

partofanyfile'srow,likeitsmodificationdateorfilesize.

Tip:Ifyouincludeaparticulariconinyourdiagonally

draggedgroupbymistake,

selectedcluster.

highlightagroupofconsecutiveicons,asdescribedabove.

There'safasterwaytodothesamething:Clickthefirst

iconyouwanttohighlight,andthenShift-clickthelastfile,

justasinWindows.Allthefilesinbetweenare

automaticallyselected,alongwiththetwoiconsyouclicked.

Tohighlightrandomicons.Ifyouwanttohighlightonly

thefirst,third,andseventhiconsinawindow,forexample,

startbyclickingiconNo.1.Then



-clickeachoftheothers



(or -dragnewrectanglesaroundthem).Eachicon

darkenstoshowthatyou'veselectedit.

Ifyou'rehighlightingalongstringoficonsandclickoneby

mistake,youdon'thavetostartover.Instead,just -click

itagain,sothatthedarkhighlightingdisappears.(Ifyoudo

wanttostartover,youcandeselectallselectediconsby

clickinganyemptypartofthewindow—orbypressingthe

Esckey.)

keytrickisespeciallyhandyifyouwanttoselect



almostalltheiconsinawindow.Press

everythinginthefolder,then

todeselectthem.

Onceyou'vehighlightedmultipleicons,youcanmanipulate

themallatonce.Forexample,youcandragthemenmasseto

anotherfolderordiskbydragginganyoneofthehighlighted

icons.Allotherhighlightediconsgoalongfortheride.This

techniqueisespeciallyusefulwhenyouwanttobackupa

bunchoffilesbydraggingthemontoadifferentdisk,delete

themallbydraggingthemtotheTrash,andsoon.

Whenmultipleiconsareselected,thecommandsintheFileand

Editmenus—suchasDuplicate,Open,andMakeAlias—applyto

allofthemsimultaneously.



3.2.2.SelectingIconsfromtheKeyboard

Forthespeedfanatic,usingthemousetoclickaniconisa

hopelesswasteoftime.Fortunately,youcanalsoselectanicon

bytypingthefirstcouplelettersofitsname.

WhenlookingatyourHomewindow,forexample,youcantype

MtohighlighttheMoviesfolder.Andifyouactuallyintendedto

highlighttheMusicfolderinstead,presstheTabkeytohighlight

thenexticoninthewindowalphabetically.Shift-Tabhighlights

thepreviousiconalphabetically.Orusethearrowkeysto



highlightaneighboringicon.

(TheTab-keytrickworksonlyinicon,list,andCoverFlowviews

—notcolumnview,alas.Youcanalwaysusethe and

keystohighlightadjacentcolumns,however.)

Afterhighlightinganiconthisway,youcanmanipulateitusing

thecommandsintheFilemenuortheirkeyboardequivalents:

open(



-O),putitintotheTrash(



duplicate(



-Delete),GetInfo(



-I),



-D),ormakeanalias,asdescribedlaterinthis



chapter( -L).Byturningonthespecialdisabilityfeatures

describedinSection11.2,youcanevenmovethehighlighted

iconusingonlythekeyboard.



3.3.MovingandCopyingIcons

InMacOSX,therearetwowaystomoveorcopyiconsfrom

oneplacetoanother:bydraggingthem,orbyusingtheCopy

andPastecommands.



3.3.1.CopyingbyDragging

Youcandragiconsfromonefoldertoanother,fromonedriveto

another,fromadrivetoafolderonanotherdrive,andsoon.

(Whenyou'veselectedseveralicons,draganyoneofthem;the

otherstagalong.)WhiletheMaciscopying,youcantellthat

theprocessisstillunderwayeveniftheprogressbarishidden

behindawindow,becausetheiconofthecopiedmaterialshows

updimmedinitsnewhome,darkeningonlywhenthecopying

processisover.(YoucanalsotellbecauseLeopard'sprogress

boxisalotclearerandprettierthanitusedtobe.)Youcan

canceltheprocessbypressingeither



-periodortheEsckey.



Tip:Ifyou'recopyingfilesintoadiskorfolderthatalready

containsitemswiththesamenames,MacOS-Xasksyou

individuallyabouteachone.("Anolderitemnamed

'Fiddlesticks'withextension'.doc'alreadyexistsinthis

location.")Notethat,thankheaven,MacOSXtellsyouwhether

theversionyou'rereplacingisolderornewerthantheone

you'removing.Turnon"Applytoall"ifalloftheincomingicons

should(orshouldnot)replacetheoldonesofthesamenames.

ThenclickReplaceorDon'tReplace,asyouseefit,orStopto

haltthewholecopyingbusiness.

UnderstandingwhentheMaccopiesadraggediconandwhenit

movesitbewildersmanyabeginner.However,theschemeis

fairlysimplewhenyouconsiderthefollowing:
