Unfortunately,soundcanbereallydifficulttomanageonyour

camcorderifyoutrytodoitwhileyou'reshootingvideo.The

built-inmicrophoneisomnidirectional,whichmeansitpicksup

soundsfromeverywherearoundyouwhileyourecord,resulting

inalotofunwantednoises.Also,becauseyoushootfroma

numberofdifferentpositionsmovingclosetoandfarawayfrom

yoursubjects,startingandstoppingthecamerabetween

shotsgettingaconsistentstreamofaudioisalmostimpossible.

Ifthesechallengesweren'tbadenough,theresultsofpoor

audiomakeforreallypoorvideos.Forsomepsychophysical

reason,bad-qualityvideolooksbetterwithgoodsound,and,

amazingly,good-qualityvideolooksworsewithbadsound.

Manyfactorsgointowhatconstitutesgoodsound:clearvoices

thataredistinctfrombackgroundnoises;properrelative

volumeofspeechandotherelementsofthepicture;arich

tapestryofsoundstoaddtextureandemotiontothevideo.

Becauseit'ssohardtogetgood-qualitysoundfromthe

camera'smicrophonewhileyoushootvideo,thefastestwayto

getgoodsoundinyourfinishedprojectsistoignoremostofthe

audiofromyourshootandinsteadusemusicfroma

professionallycreatedCD.Yourvideowillbenefitfromthegreat

productionvalueofsomeoneelse'swork.Butifyouwant

productionsoundthatis,thesoundthat'sgoingonwhileyou're

shootingthevideoittakesmoreeffort.Youneedtouse

additionalmicrophonesandhavesomeonecarefullymonitor

howeverythingsoundswhileit'sbeingrecorded.Forpeoplelike

Charlie,Jennifer,andChristopher,thisaddstoomuch

complexity,demandstoomuchequipment,andprobably

requirestoomuchwork.

Therearealternatives.Youcanuseyourcamcordernotonlyas

adigitalvideorecorderbutalsoasadigitalaudiorecorder.And

yourMacitselfhasabuilt-inmicrophone.Withthesehandy

audiotoolsandalittlebasicinformation,youcanadd

professional-qualitysound(andthusprofessional-quality

productionvalues)toyourdynamicslideshowsand,ultimately,



yourvideos.

Inthislesson,you'llrevisitChristopher'sdynamicslideshow

fromthebirthdayparty.Addingmusicasyouoriginallydidwas

anexcellentoptiontocreateasoundtrack.Nowyouwilltake

interviewsChristopherrecordedduringthepartyandmakea

narrationtrackwiththem.Lateryou'llcheckinwithCharlieand

seeothernarrationalternativesthatiMovieprovidesforhis

simpleschoolreport.



UsingYourCamcorderasaMicrophone

Putthelenscaponyourdigitalvideocamcorder.Forthe

moment,forgetthatthissmallgadgetshootsvideo.Instead,

lookaroundthebodyofthedeviceandfindthemicrophone.

Everycamcorderhasone.Whileitmaybehardtofind,it

shouldlooksomethingliketheclassicmicrophonesyou'veseen

before;maybeit'sgotablackorsilvermeshoveralittlearea

towardthetoporfrontofthecamcorder.Ifyoucan'tfindit,

checkyourmanual.



Now,insteadofshootingvideo,holdthecamerainsuchaway

thatyoucanpresstherecordbuttonwhileholdingthe

microphoneafewinchesfromthesoundorpersonyouwantto

record.

Ifyou'rehavingdifficultyknowingwhetheryou'rerecording,



youcankeeptheLCDflipscreenopensoyoucanseethered

dotindicatingthatrecordingisunderway.



Recordingaudiowhileyou'reshootingvideocanbeextremely

challengingforatleastacoupleofreasons.Oneisthatevery

timeyoumovetogetadifferentshot,yourdistancetothe

sourceofsoundchangessignificantly.Whenyourecordaudio

whileshootingvideo,themicrophonetendstotakeabackseat

tothelens.Theproblemisn'tthetechnology;it'sjustthe

natureofshootingvideo.Moveawayforawideshot,andthe

microphonecan'tpickupanytalking.Movecloseforadetail

shot,andthevoicesboom.Usingthissoundisexceptionally

difficultfortechnicalreasons.

Anotherreasonthatit'squitechallengingtorecordsoundand

videoatthesametimeisbecauseit'snosmallfeattorecord

interestingconversation.Whenyoureallylistentothem

dispassionately,evenenjoyableconversationsareunbearably

dull.Youmighthaveexpectedtorecordafunbitof

conversation,butitgoesonandon,withnobeginningandno

end,andonlyalongstreamofsound.Ourbrainfoolsusinto

thinkingconversationsarediscreteandfinitewhenintruththey

areveryslow,veryrepetitive,andoftenmissingkeywordsor

usinghalfthoughts.Evenwithgreattoolsandlotsofpractice,

whenyoutrytorecordone,youstillendupmissingparts;it's

hardtocapturetheentirething.

Tocircumventthechallengesofrecordingaconversationin

videoandaudioatthesametime,shootvideoforthepicture

partfirst,andlaterrecordaudio.Thatwayyoucanfocus

specificallyonthegoalofgettinggoodsound,andyouhavea

betterchanceofgettingtherawmaterialsrequiredtomake

high-qualityproduct.



Christopherwantstorecordsomeoftheendearingthingshis

daughterandherfriendsaretalkingaboutather12thbirthday

party.Butinsteadofshootingvideoandconcentratingonthe

soundatthesametime,Christopherconcentratessolelyon

gettingtheimagesheneedstoedit.Then,atsomelaterpoint

intheevent,hemakesamentalshiftusingthecamcorderonly

asamicrophonetointerviewthegirls,askingquestions,

eavesdroppingalittle,intentlylisteningtothesoundsofthe

event.



Usingthecamcorderasamicrophonehasmanyadvantages,in

additiontothosejustdescribed.Inthefirstplace,thereis

somethingfarlessinvasiveaboutamicrophonethana

camcorder.Peopleactdifferentlywhenalensispointedat

them.Whiletheystillmightbealittleuptightwithyouholding

outamicrophone(evenoneshapedlikeacamera!),theydo

tendtorelaxonceyou'remakingeyecontactandstanding



closerbothpossiblenowthatthecameraisn'tinfrontofyour

face.



Tip

Keepingthelenscaponthecameratendstohelpdisarmyour

subjects,forsomereason.Anythingyoucandotohelpyour

subjectrelaxwillresultinabetterrecording(audioaswellas

video).



Christopherholdsthemicrophoneaboutaninchortwofromthe

mouthofwhoeverisspeaking.Thisguaranteesthevoicewillbe

veryclearandmuchlouderthananyofthebackgroundsounds

intheroom.Whileit'salwayschallengingtorecordpeople(as

luckwouldhaveit,peoplealwaysseemtobetheirfunniest

whenyou'retalkingtosomeoneelseandthemicrophoneisso

farawayyoucanbarelyhearthem),holdingacamcorderlikea

microphoneisadirectandeasywaytogetlivesound.



UsingAudioiniMovie

OnceChristopherhasrecordedafewminutesofinterviews,he

couldgobacktoshootingvideoorconsiderhimselfdone.But

Christopherisn'tgoingtobemakingavideoatall;instead,he

wantstousethecamcordertogetafewminutesofaudioto

addtohisdynamicslideshow.

2. Deletethemusicintheaudiotrackbyselectingitand

pressingDeleteonyourkeyboard.

Thesoundwasfinebefore,butit'snotrequirednow.



Note

Youcouldjustmutethemusictrackbydeselectingtheaudio

boxonthefarrightofthetimeline.Butvisualizingthework

you'llbedoinghereisalittleeasierifthemusicisgone.So

thelessonwillproceedwiththemusicdeleted,evenifyou

decideyou'dliketokeepitandmixitattheend.

Whenthereisnovideoimagetohelpidentifytheclips,

addinglabelstoeachismoreimportant.Theseclipsare

labeled,butyoucouldadjustthemtoyourlikingbydoubleclickingaclipandtypinganewname.

Andalthoughtheseclipsmaynotlooklikemuch,each

containsasnippetofconversationonagiventopic.They

canbechoppedupwithCommand-Ttofindsmallgemsof

dialogue,butfornowwe'regoingtotreatthemasgood

interviewclipsintheirentirety.



SeparatingPictureFromSound

Beforeyoucanworkwithsoundalone,youmustbe

comfortablesplittingthesoundfromthevideoyoushot.

ImportedclipsintheClippaneconsistofmergedpictureand

sound,evenwhenthepictureisblack.Yourfirsttask,then,is



learningtoseparateeachshotintoitscomponents.

1. SettheworkspacetopresentClipviewandscrolldownto

theendofthesequence.

2. GobacktotheClippaneand,intheorderinwhichtheshots

appearintheClippane(startingatthetopleftandmoving

throughthemasifyouwerereading),dragthemtotheend

oftheclipsintheworkspace.

eachclipinthepane,anddragthemtotheworkspacein

onemove.Checktheordertomakesureit'sthesameas

theoriginalorder.
