14.1.GettingReadytoPrint

Whetheryou'regoingtoprintathomeorsendyourphotosout,

youneedtomakesureyourimagefileissetuptogiveyou

good-lookingprints.

Thefirstthingtocheckisyourphoto'sresolution,which

controlsthenumberofpixelsinyourimage.Ifyoudon'thave

enoughpixelsinyourphoto,you'renotgoingtogetagood

print.300pixelsperinch(ppi)isusuallyconsideredoptimum,

andaqualityprintneedsaresolutionofatleast150ppito

avoidthegrainylookyouseeinlow-resolutionphotos(see

page64formoreonsettingyourphoto'sresolution).



Note:Besureyousetyourresolutiontoawhole

numberdecimalstendtocauseblacklinesonyourprints.In

otherwords,247ppiisfine,butyoumayhaveproblemsifthe

ppiis247.32.

Ifyou'reprintingonphotopaperorsendingyourphotosoutfor

printing,checktobesurethatyourphotosarecroppedtoa

standardpapersize.(Seepage53formoreaboutcropping.)

Andifyou'reprintingathome,thepaperyouprintonmakesa

bigdifferenceinthecolorandqualityofyouroutput.You'llget

thebestresultsifyouuseyourprintermanufacturer's

recommendedpaperandink.



14.2.UsingaPhotoProcessingService

Youdon'tevenneedtoownaprintertoprintyourphotos.

There'snoshortageofcompanieshopingyou'llchoosethemfor

theprivilegeofprintingoutyourphotos.Youcanorderprints

onlineoruseaprintkioskatalocalstore.Elementsmakesit

veryeasytoprepareyourphotosforprintingeitherway.Just

saveyourphotosinacompatiblefileformat(seepage75for

moreaboutpickingdifferentfileformats).TheJPEGformatis

usuallyyourbestbet,butalwayscheckwiththeserviceyou

plantousetoseeiftheyhaveanyspecialrequirements.

Ifyouplantophysicallytakeyourphotosinforprinting(as

opposedtoorderingthemonline),burnthephotostoaCDand

takethatin.You'llhavefewerproblemsthanyouwouldifyou

trytocopyyoureditedphotosbackontoyourcamera's

memorycard.



Note:IfyouhaveaMac,don'tburnyourCDiniPhoto.iPhoto

makesCDsusingaproprietaryformatthatphoto-printingkiosks

can'tread.Instead,exportyourphotosfromiPhototothe

desktopandburnfromtheFindertocreateadiscthatanyone

canread.



14.2.1.OrderingPrintsfromWithinElements

(WindowsOnly)

AdobehaspartneredwithKodak'sonlinephoto-printingservice,

Ofoto.com,whichmakesiteasytouploadphotosdirectlyfrom

theOrganizer.YoucansharephotoswithotherOfoto.com

accountholders(creatinganaccountisfree),ororderprintsor

books.(Therearemanyotheronlineprintingservicesthatyou



canalsouse,buttheprocessisn'tintegratedrightinto

ElementsthewayitiswithOfoto.)

ThefirsttimeyouclicktheOrganizer'sPrintshortcutand

choose"OrderPrints,"theOrganizerdisplaysanOfoto.com

window,whichasksyoutosetupanOfotoaccountifyoudon't

alreadyhaveone.Aneasy-to-followwizardappearstohelpyou

setupyouraccount.(IfyoualreadyhaveanOfotoaccount,you

justlogin.)

ThenyoutellOfotohowmanyprintsyouwantofeachphoto

you'veselectedandwhichsizestheyshouldbe.Youconfirm

yourorder,andinafewdays,yourprintsarriveinthemail.The

entireprocessisveryeasy,andthepricingiscompetitivewith

mostdrugstorephotoprinting.

Togetstarted,youfirstneedtomakesureElementshasthe

latestsoftwareforconnectingtoOfoto.Tocheckforrecent

updates,intheOrganizer,gotoEdit Preferences

Services.IntheAvailableServicessection,selectPrint(inthe

firstpull-downmenu)and"AdobePhotoshopServices,provided

byOfoto"(inthesecondmenu).ThenclicktheRefreshbutton.



Tip:Whileyou'reintheServiceswindow,youmightalsowant

toclick"UpdateCreations"togetanynewlayoutsforthe

Createprojects.Severaldesignshavebeenaddedsince

Elements3firstcameout.

Onceyou'vecreatedyourOfotoaccountandyou'rereadyto

orderprints:

1. IntheOrganizer,selectthephotosyouwanttoprint.

Ifthephotosyouwantarescatteredaround,youmayfind

iteasiertomakeatemporarycollection(seepage37for

howtocreateacollection)sothatyoucaneasilyseethem



allonce.Alternatively,youcanalsojustCtrl+clicktoselect

thephotosyouwant.

2. ConnecttoOfoto.com.

GotoFile OrderPrints,orintheShortcutsbar,clickthe

PrintericonandthenchooseOrderprints.Ifyou'renot

alreadyonline,ElementsbringsupanInternetconnection

window.Clickokay,andElementsconnectsyoutotheOfoto

Website.

3. LogintoyourOfotoaccount.

Enteryournameandpassword.

4. Orderyourprints.

Selectthesizeandnumberofprintsforeachphoto,then

enteryourshippinginformation.You'llreceiveanenvelope

ofprintsinthemailinafewdays.Theonlydifference

betweenonlineprintsandfilmprintsisthattheenvelope

containsacontactsheet(apageofthumbnail-sized

photos),insteadofnegatives.(Youstillhaveyour

"negatives,"whichareyouroriginalfiles.)

ElementsmakesorderingprintsfromOfotoveryconvenient.Of

course,youcanuseOfotowithouttheOrganizer,andyoucan

useotheronlineprintserviceslikeShutterfly

(www.shutterfly.com)ifyoulike.Therealadvantageofordering

fromElementsistheconvenienceofbeingabletoworkright

fromtheOrganizer.



Note:MacownerscanorderprintsandbooksfromOfotoby

usingiPhoto.Ifyoudon'tuseiPhoto,youcandownloadOfoto

ExpressforMac(www.ofoto.com/DownloadClient.jsp),which

helpsyouuploadyourphotostoOfoto'sWebsite.



14.3.PrintingfromtheEditor

Ifyouwanttodoyourownprinting,youcanprintdirectlyfrom

theElementsEditor.Ifyou'reaMacowner,thisiswhereyou'll

doyourprinting,althoughmostofthissectionappliestoboth

platformsequally.Ifyou'vegottheWindowsversionof

Elements,youcanonlyprintonephotoatatimefromthe

Editor,butit'sconvenientnothavingtorunbacktothe

Organizereverytimeyouwanttoprintaphoto.(Printing

multiplephotos,likecontactsheets,ishandledbythe

Organizer,whichisexplainedlater.)

Beforeyouactuallyprintyourphotos,forbestresults,youneed

tocheckthesettingsintwowindowsthePageSetupdialogbox,

andtheElementsPrintPreviewWindow.



14.3.2.PageSetup

ThePageSetupwindowisthesameforalltheprogramsyou

haveonyourcomputer.It'swhereyousetyourpagesizeand

orientationandtellthecomputerwhichprinteryou'reusing,if

youhavemorethanoneprinter.

Whetheryou'reusingWindowsoraMac,yougettoPageSetup

bygoingtoFile PageSetup.YoucanalsopressCtrl+Shift+P

( -Shift-P)orclickthePageSetupbuttonontheElementsPrint

Previewwindow(explainedlater).

InPageSetup,startbychoosingthecorrectprinter.In

Windows,clickthePrinterbuttontochooseaprinter.OnaMac,

chooseitfromthepull-downmenu.Thissettingisimportantfor

gettingyourmarginsexactlyright.Next,inthemainPage

Setupwindow,choosethepapersizeyouwantandthe

orientation(portraitorlandscape).Whenyou'veselectedthese



settings,you'rereadytogototheElementsPrintPreviewdialog

box.



14.3.3.PrintPreview

PrintPreviewisyourcontrolcenterforprintingfromElements.

Itoffersyouagreatmanywaystotweakyourprints,from

simplypositioningyourphotocorrectlytomakingvery

sophisticatedcoloradjustments.

PressCtrl+P( -P)intheEditortocallupthePrintPreview

window.Forsimpleprinting,justmakesurethephotois

properlypositionedonthepageandclickPrint.Ifyou'relucky,

you'llgetaperfectlookingprint.Ifyoudon'tlikethecolor,the

nextsectiononcolormanagementexplainsyouroptions.

Don'tbeintimidatedbythePrintPreviewwindow,whichis

showninFigure14-1.Youprobablywon'tneedallthesettings

everytimeyouprint,buteachsettingcomesinhandysooneror

later.

OntheleftsideofthePrintPreviewwindowisathumbnail

showingthelocationwhereyourphotowillprint.Normally,

Elementsshowsaboundingbox,theblackoutlinewithhandles

onthecornersindicatingtheedgesofyourphoto.Don'tworry,

theboundingboxitselfdoesn'tprintalongwithyourphoto.The

boxjustgivesyouawaytomoveandresizeyourimageby

draggingthehandles.Ifseeingtheboundingboxbothersyou,

getridofitbyturningofftheShowBoundingBoxcheckbox.

corneroftheimagewindow.Usetheseifyouneedtochange

theorientationofyourphoto.

Ifyouwanttoprintonlypartofaphoto,Figure14-2shows

howtoprintaselectedareaofapicture.Yourselectionmustbe

aplainrectangleorsquarewithoutanyfeathering(seepage

106),orElementswon'tprintit.

YoucanresizeyourphotoinPrintPreviewinseveralways:

PrintSizemenu.Chooseanyprintsizefromthelistor

enteraCustomSize."FitOnPage"changesthesizeofyour

image,ifnecessary,tofitthesizeofthepaperyou'reusing.

ScaledPrintSize.Resizeyourphotobyacertainpercent

orbyenteringnewdimensionshere.(Ifyouwantacustom



size,youcanjustenterthesizehere.Youdon'thaveto

changethePrintSizepull-downmenu,too.)

BoundingBox.Youcanalsousetheboundingboxto

changethesizeofyourimage.HoldShift(tokeepthe

proportionsthesame)anddragabox(onanyofthe

boundingbox'scorners)tomakeyourimagelargeror

smaller.

Elementsresamplesyourimage(seepage71)tomakeitfitthe

sizeyouchoose.Don'tgolargerthan100percent,orthe

qualityofyourphotostartstodeteriorateandyou'llgeta

warningfromElements(seeFigure14-3).

TheothersettingsinthemainpartofthePrintPreviewwindow

are:

Position.ThistellsElementswheretoputyourphotoonthe

page.Elementsstartsyououtwiththe"CenterImage"

checkboxturnedon.Youneedtoturnitoffbeforeyoucan

repositionyourimage.Tochangethelocationofyourphoto,

eitherdragitsthumbnailortypetheamountofoffsetyou

wantintheboxesprovided.(Topcontrolshowfaryour

imageisfromthetopofthepage;Leftcontrolsthedistance

fromtheleftedgeofthepage.)

Border.Ifyouwanttoaddabordertoyourphoto,turnon

theBordercheckboxandenterthesizeyouwantforyour

border(ininches,millimeters,orpoints).Elementsshrinks

yourphototoaccommodatetheborder.Thenclickthewhite



squaretobringuptheElementsColorPicker(seepage

175)sothatyoucanchooseacolorforyourborder.
