4.1.TheQuickFixWindow

GettingtotheQuickFixwindowiseasy.Ifyou'reintheEditor,

gototheShortcutsbarandclicktheQuickFixbutton.Ifyou're

intheOrganizer,ontheShortcutsbar,clicktheEditbutton's

drop-downtriangle,andchoose"GotoQuickFix."TheQuickFix

windowlookslikeastripped-downversionoftheStandard

Editor(seeFigure4-1).

Yourtoolsareneatlyarrangedonbothsidesofyourimage:on

theleftside,there'safour-itemToolbox,andontherightside,

there'sacollectionofquick-editpalettesstoredinsidethe

ControlPanel.First,you'lltakeaquicklookatwhattoolsQuick

Fixprovidesyouwith.Then,laterinthechapter,you'lllearn

howtoactuallyusethem.



4.1.1.TheQuickFixToolbox

TheToolboxholdsaneasy-to-navigatesubsetofthelargertool

collectionyou'llfindintheStandardEditwindow.Allthetools

workthesamewayinbothmodes,andyoucanalsousethe

samekeystrokestoswitchtoolshere,too.Fromtoptobottom,

theQuickFixToolboxholds:

TheZoomtoolletsyoutelescopeinandoutonyourimage

sothatyoucangetagoodcloselookatdetailsorpullback

toseethewholephoto.(Seepage61formoreonhowthe

Zoomtoolworks.)

TheHandtoolhelpsmoveyourphotoaroundintheimage

windowjustlikegrabbingitandmovingitwithyourown

hand(page63).

TheCroptoolletsyouchangethesizeandshapeofyour

photo.Youcropofftheareasyoudon'twant(page54).

TheRedEyetoolmakesitasnaptofixthosehorriblered

eyesyouseeinflashphotos(page87).



4.1.2.TheQuickFixControlPanel

TheControlPanel,ontherightsideoftheQuickFixwindow,is

whereyou'llmakemostofyouradjustments.Elementshelpfully

arrangeseverythingintofourpalettesGeneralFixes,Lighting,

Color,andSharpenlistedintheorderyou'lltypicallyusethem.

Inmostcases,itmakessensetostartatthetopandworkyour

waydownuntilyougettheresultsyouwant.(Seepage97for

moresuggestionsonwhatordertoworkin.)

TheControlPanelalwaysfillstherightsideoftheQuickFix

screen.There'snowaytohideit,andyoucan'tdragthe

palettesoutoftheControlPanelasyoucaninStandardEdit

mode.Butyoucanexpandandcollapsethem,asexplainedin

Figure4-2.



Note:IfyougointoQuickFixmodebeforeyouopenaphoto,

youwon'tseethepointersinthesliders,justemptytracks.

Don'tworrythey'llautomaticallyappearassoonasyouopena

photoandgivethemsomethingtoworkon.

4.1.3.DifferentViews:Aftervs.BeforeandAfter

WhenyouopenanimageinQuickFixyourpicturefirstappears

byitselfinthemainwindowwiththewordAfteraboveit.

ElementskeepstheBeforeversionyouroriginalphototucked

away,outofsight.Butyoucanpickfromthreeotherdifferent

layouts,whichyoucanchooseatanytime:BeforeOnly,Before

andAfter(Portrait),andBeforeandAfter(Landscape).The

BeforeandAfterviewsareespeciallyhelpfulwhenyou'retrying

tofigureoutifyou'reimprovingyourpictureornot,asshownin

WindowsveteranswillprobablyfindtheQuickFixwindowprettynormalsinceit

takesoveryourwholescreen.Butifyou'reonaMac,thefirstthingyoumay

noticeinQuickFixisthatyoucan'tseeyourdesktopanymore.Thisisjustthe

wayAdobedesignedElements.

Macownersmayfeeltrappedheresinceyoucan'teasilyclickonthedesktopand

getbacktotherestofyourcomputinglife.Andtabbingdoesn'thidetheControl

PanelthewayithidesthePalettebininStandardEdit.

ToescapefromQuickFixandgetbacktowhereyoucanseeyourdesktop,click

theStandardEditbuttonintheOptionsbartoreturntoamoreMac-likeview.Or,

ifyouwanttohideElementscompletely,press -Ctrl-H.Tobringtheprogram

backonscreenagain,clickitsiconinthedock.Also,clickingtheXintheupper-



rightcorneroftheQuickFixscreenclosesyourphotobutnotElements.



Note:QuickFixlimitstheamountofscreenspaceavailablefor

yourimage.Ifyouwantalargerviewwhileyouwork,youneed

toclickovertoStandardEdit.



4.2.EditingYourPhotos

ThetoolsintheQuickFixwindowareprettysimpletouse.You

cantryoneorallofthemit'suptoyou.Andwheneveryou're

happywithhowyourphotolooks,youcanleaveQuickFixand

gobacktotheStandardEditor.

Ifyouwanttorotateyourphoto,youcandoitherebyclicking

theappropriateRotatebuttonatthetopoftheControlPanel.

Note:IfyouclicktheQuickFixResetbutton,justaboveyour

image,you'llreturnyourphototothewayitlookedbeforeyou

startedworkinginQuickFix.ThisbuttonundoesallQuickFix

edits,sodon'tuseitifyouonlywanttoundoasingleaction.

Forthat,justusetheregularundocommand:Edit Undoor

Ctrl+Z( -Z).



4.2.4.FixingRedEye

Everyonewho'severtakenaflashphotohasrunintothe

dreadedproblemofredeyethoseglowing,demonicpupilsthat

makeyourlittlecherublooklikesomethingoutofanAnneRice

novel.Redeyeisevenmoreofaproblemwithdigitalcameras

thanwithfilm,butluckily,Elementshasasimpleandterrific

RedEyetoolforfixingit.Allyouneedtodoisclickthered

spotswiththeRedEyetool,andyourproblemsaresolved.

TousetheRedEyetool(Figure4-4):

1. Openaphoto.



TheRedEyetoolworksthesamewhetheryougettoitfrom

theQuickFixToolboxorthemainToolboxinEditmode.

2. Zoominsoyoucanseewhereyou'reclicking.

UsetheZoomtooltomagnifytheeyes.Youcanalsoswitch

totheHandtoolifyouneedtodragthephotosothatthe

eyesarefrontandcenter.

3. ActivatetheRedEyetool.

ClicktheRedEyeiconintheToolboxorpressY.

4. ClickintheredpartofthepupilwiththeRedEyetool

(seeFigure4-4).

That'sit.Justoneclickshouldfixit.Ifasingleclickdoesn't

fixtheproblem,youcanalsotrydraggingoverthepupil

withtheRedEyetool.Sometimesonemethodworksbetter

thantheother.YoucanalsoadjusttwosettingsontheRed

Eyetool:DarkenAmountandPupilSize,asexplainedlater.

5. Clickintheothereye.

Repeattheprocessontheothereye,andthenyou'redone.

IfyouneedtoadjusthowtheRedEyetoolworks,theOptions

bargivesyoutwocontrols,although99%ofthetimeyoucan

ignorethem:

DarkenAmount.Iftheresultistoolight,increasethe

percentageinthisbox.

PupilSize.Increaseordecreasethenumberheretotell

Elementshowmuchareatoconsiderpartofapupil.

POWERUSERS'CLINIC

OtherRedEyeFixes

TheRedEyetooldoesagreatjobmostofthetimebutitdoesn'talwayswork

anditdoesn'tworkonanimals'eyes.Thereareacoupleofotherwaysyoucan

fixredeyethatworkinalmostanysituation.Here'sone:

1.



Zoomway,wayinontheeye.Youwanttobeabletoseetheindividual

pixels.



2. UsetheEyedroppertool(page177)tosamplethecolorfromagoodareaof

theeye,orfromanotherphoto.Confirmthatyou'vegotthecoloryouwant

bycheckingtheForegroundcolorpicker.

3.



GetoutthePenciltool(page280)andsetitssizeto1pixel.



4. Nowclickinthebadoremptypixelsoftheeyetoreplacethecolorwiththe

correctshade.Remembertoleaveacoupleofwhitepixelsforacatch-light.

Thissolutionworkseveniftheeyeisblownout(i.e.,allwhitewithnocolor

informationleft.)

Ifyouunderstandlayers,youcanalsofixRedEyebyselectingthebadarea,

creatingaHue/Saturationadjustmentlayeranddesaturatingtheredarea,but

thismethoddoesn'tworksowelliftheeyeisblownout.



4.2.5.SmartFix

ThesecretweaponintheQuickFixwindowistheSmartFix

command,whichautomaticallyadjustsapicture'slighting,

color,andcontrast,allwithoneclick.Youdon'thavetofigure

anythingout.Elementsdoesitallforyou.

You'llfindtheSmartFixintheGeneralFixespalette,andit's

aboutaseasytouseashittingthespeeddialbuttononyour

phone:clicktheAutoSmartFixbutton,andifthestarsare

aligned,yourpicturewillimmediatelylookbetter.(Figure4-5

givesyouaglimpseofitscapabilities.)



Tip:You'llfindAutobuttonsscatteredthroughoutElements.

Elementsusesthemtomakeabest-guessattemptto

implementwhateverchangetheAutobuttonisnextto(Smart

Fix,Levels,Contrast,etc.).Itneverhurtstoatleasttryclicking

theseAutobuttonssinceifyoudon'tlikewhatyousee,youcan

alwaysperformthemagicalundo:Edit Undo,orCtrl+Z( Z).

Ifyou'rehappywiththeAutoSmartFixbutton'schanges,you

canmoveontoanewphoto,ortrysharpeningyourphotoa

little(seepage96)ifthefocusappearsalittlefuzzy.Youdon't

needtodoanythingtoaccepttheSmartFixchanges.

Butifyou'renotecstaticwithyourresults,takeagoodlookat

yourphoto.IfyoulikewhatAutoSmartFixhasdone,butthe

effectistoostrongortooweak,pressCtrl+Z( -Z)toundoit,

andtrytheSmartFixAmountsliderinstead.TheAmountslider

doesthesamethingtheAutoSmartFixdoes,onlyyoucontrol



thedegreeofchange.

Watchtheimageasyoumovetheslidertotheright.Ifyour

computerisslow,there'sacertainamountoflagtime,sogo

slowlytogiveitachancetocatchup.Ifyouhappentooverdo

it,sometimesit'seasiertopresstheResetbuttonaboveyour

imageandstartagain.Figure4-6explainshowtousethe

checkmarkandthecancelbutton(whichappearnexttothe

GeneralFixeslabel)toacceptorrejectyourchanges.



Tip:Usuallyyougetbetterresultswithalotoflittlenudgesto

theSmartFixsliderthanbymovingitwayovertotherightand

backagain.

Incidentally,thesearethesameSmartFixcommandsyousee

intwoplacesintheEditor'sEnhanceMenu:Enhance Auto

SmartFix(Ctrl+M,or -Option-M)andEnhance Adjust

SmartFix(Ctrl+Shift+M,or -Shift-M).

SometimesSmartFixjustisn'tsmartenoughtodoeverything

youwantittodo,andsometimesitdoesthingsyoudon'twant

ittodotoyourphotos.TheSmartFixisbetterwithphotosthat

areunderexposedthanphotosthatareoverexposed,forone

thing.Fortunately,youstillhaveseveralothereditingchoicesto

try,andthey'recoveredinthefollowingsections.Ifyoudon't

likewhatSmartFixhasdonetoyourphoto,undoitbefore

goingontomakeotherchanges.
