Ethernet shared loop protection



The ring/path protection provided by this feature is similar to the PDH loop protection

schemes. Each node of the loop receives payload data through two connections, which

work bi-directional. The BTS node transmits its own traffic in both directions. The active

(protected) path is selected by loop bits that are introduced by the Master Node. Thereafter, the loop bits are analyzed by each BTS slaves. Loop bits indicate an error free

path and in case an error breaks a link, the bits change and the loop slave utilizes the

passive (protecting) path for the further traffic.

Link Faults Protection

Reliability is increased through redundant hardware and cabling. Broken hardware

causes a large damage to the network, if a vital part of the transport traffic is affected.

At the BSC and BTS sites, hardware unit protection mechanisms must be in place. The

plug-in units FIQx and FIYx of the Flexi EDGE and Flexi Multiradio GSM/EDGE already

support multiple Ethernet ports and hence no new hardware variants are required at

BTS.

Path Protection

Th Ethernet Ring/Path protection feature implements Path protection between BTSs

and BSC Site Switch. Path protection not only covers the link to the next node but also

the complete path between the BTS and the protect path head end device. Path protection is implemented through layer 2 protocols RSTP.

Ring Protection

Ring set-ups are typically used in larger microwave radio transport networks. A ring

usually consists of several BTS nodes, which are part of the loop and do not have any

meshed link. However, the starting point of the ring requires a head-end node like the

PDH path protection scheme.

Ethernet ring protection



Only nodes that are connected through two Ethernet ports are part of the loop. These

nodes participate in the protection as shown in the figure below. In this example, BTS 4

and BTS 5 are not part of the loop. They are attached to BTS 2, which is protected by

the loop. Both BTS 4 and BTS 5 are protected against faults in the ring but not against

faults between them and BTS 2.

BSS101459 Full GE Support in FIYB/FIQB

In case of a chain or ring topology or in case of co-siting, a Flexi EDGE or Flexi Multiradio

BTS GSM/EDGE with FIYB/FIQB has a chain/ring capacity to 100 Mbit/s with FlexiPacket Radio solution (zero footprint MWR solution). Enabling Gigabit Ethernet (GE) on

the electrical interfaces increases the capacity to 1000 Mbit/s and enables a cost-effective (no indoor unit) solution. In this case, the Fiber (GE optical) is terminated at FIYB or

FIQB in the Flexi EDGE or Flexi Multiradio BTS. The interconnection of the BTSs is done

using GE electrical interfaces. Without this feature, external equipment would be

required to increase the fiber ring capacity. This feature has no seperate license.

BSS101414 Packet Abis Transport Media Conversion

With Packet Abis Transport Media Conversion feature, it is possible to connect Flexi

EDGE or Flexi Multiradio GSM/EDGE BTS using a Packet Abis over TDM link with a

Flexi BSC using Packet Abis over Ethernet link. The solution can also be employed in

combination with the MultiController BSC (mcBSC). Media conversion requires Packet

Abis to be used in both BSC (Packet Abis over Ethernet) and BTS (Packet Abis over

TDM).

Packet Abis Transport Media Conversion



With this feature, BTS and BSC can be connected via crossed media access. Packet

Abis Transport Media Conversion feature has no license. The feature can be taken into

use by installing an external third-party media conversion device (router) to the Abis.

The Packet Abis Transport Media conversion device is positioned at an aggregation Site

location. The media conversion device can be located near BTS sites and the existing

TDM-based transmission network can be used at the last mile of Abis. Aggregation and

QoS aware scheduling of the Packet Abis traffic are performed at the IP layer

By using this feature, BSC connectivity for BTSs with Packet Abis over TDM is enabled

with Ethernet interfaces supported by the BSC. The used device needs to:









Terminate Packet Abis over TDM

Aggregate and schedule Packet Abis Traffic at IP layer meeting the QoS

Terminate Packet Abis over Ethernet



Benefits

The Packet Abis Transport Media Conversion feature protects the existing PDH device

investment for operators, whilst enabling a smooth backhaul evolution (from PDH to

IP/Ethernet), in particular for Microwave Radio first mile applications.
